sea ports' landline accesses for calls

Our DS will try to call from Pusan South Korea sometime this weekend. At this point, we've not heard the choices he has from any port's phone service. He has no international phone, satelite phone, etc. He does have skype on his computer, but my comptuer is having trouble pulling up skype, though I've used it for more than a year now. I have heard that ports sell calling cards, which we assume are to be used from a landline. We also know skype international phone services can be purchased for use from skype on a computer to a home landline or cell phone for unlimited inexpensive phone calls per month depending on the country/s. I doubt DS has made that purchase yet, though we've emailed him about it and is currently in the Pacific. Oh Ye wise ones of ages past and present, are there other options out there for calling/talking from ports? Thanks!

Tell him to go to the Seaman's Club.. There are places on Texas Street he can call from and get internet access too.. but go to the USS club first, if it's open. Here's a link with info. http://wiki.galbijim.com/Seamen's_Club

Depending on where his ship is tied up, your son can also try the Apostleship of the Sea (Stella Maris).. They have a small facility very near the Pusan East Container Terminal (PECT) at Shinsun-dae. The place is small but has internet and phone services. Here's a link to AOS in Busan..

And if he doesn't do those, please have smelling salts handy when you open your cellphone bill for the overseas calls
No joke, we were happy to hear his voice and loved THAT.... it the silence in the lulls in conversation we had to pay for as well
(I felt like that super-fast-talking guy on the cellphone commercials)

On the other hand

and this is just a reality check - finding time and figuring out how to make the calls sometimes just does not work out. Over the course of two sea year outings I think we received less than a dozen emails from our DS (which were sent out in batch from the ship so there was no interactive email conversation) and no overseas phone calls. It was a long year - but the boy who left was not the man who returned; trust me, if you think they change during plebe year wait until they return from sea year.

Thanks for all the help and for the perspectives everyone. It will be very interesting to see the way our son is when he comes home at Thanksgiving. KDBax, I'd be happy with an email! Facebook requires internet!
