France becomes the frist country in Europe to put such a law in place...is this an infringement of freedoms or something necessary, as they put it, for ensuring gender equality?

They're gonna have trouble enforcing this law  Honestly, I think something like this just makes them a more likely target for terrorist attacks.

Paris, France (CNN) -- The French senate approved Tuesday a law banning any veils that cover the face -- including the burqa, the full-body covering worn by some Muslim women -- making France the first European country to plan such a measure.

The law passed by a vote of 246 to 1, with about 100 abstentions coming essentially from left-leaning politicians.

The legislation was overwhelmingly approved by the lower house of parliament in July and will go into effect next spring.

French people back the ban by a margin of more than four to one, the Pew Global Attitudes Project found in a survey earlier this year.

Some 82 percent of people polled approved of a ban, while 17 percent disapproved. That was the widest support the Washington-based think tank found in any of the five countries it surveyed.

Clear majorities also backed burqa bans in Germany, Britain and Spain, while two out of three Americans opposed it, the survey found.

Do I support what they are doing? No.

However...

They won't have much trouble enforcing the law IMO. France seems to be able to get away with anything. They're literally shipping gypsies out of the country. They banned the burka in schools awhile ago. This isn't anything new. Just an expansion of previous policy.

Still, the past 6 months in international/domestic politics has not painted a pretty picture for Muslims.

The Muslim population of France is estimated to be about six to ten percent Muslim out of a total population of sixty three million(The largest percentage in Western Europe). That would mean about four to six million mostly concentrated in the arrondissments in a ring around Paris. French Gendarmes are afraid to enter these areas. Check the last French elections. Even polititions were afraid to go into these areas because of the violence and riots. Charles Martel is rolling in his grave. Where is Holger Danske when we need him??

We sometimes study and sometimes remember Agincourt and Hastings. We forget Tours, Lepanto & The Siege of Vienna. In the great scheme of things more important to the survival of western culture. Those Who Forget History and so on and so on.
