Benjamin just started 11th Grade - he will complete an IB diploma program at the Int.S of Paris. He'll do the PSAT's soon and then the SAT's - we are planning to visit VMI, Norwich, the Citidel and maybe Annapolis - Ben is bilingual - English French and has always lived in Paris...he's a US citizen. I hope this will work to his advantage. My first question is when is the best time to visit - we could possibly visit in Feb 2011 or April 2011 - do you think that's too soon ? Spring term of his 11th Grade year. Thanks - any advice on beginning the process from our geographical location is most welcome.

Feb. or April of junior year is not at all too early. I think visiting as many prospective colleges (this goes for "civilian" colleges too) as possible before senior year is a good idea, if only to narrow down the list of prospective schools and save on application fees.

Thanks - do you know if there is anyone to contact at these schools for students who live outside of the US ?

Living outside of the US won't necessarily put him at an advantage over other applicants for USNA. There is a specific admissions officer for overseas students. Someone on this site will probably be able to address this.

If he's got solid grades and SAT scores he doesn't really need geographics to work in his advantage at Norwich, VMI, and Citadel. Is he doing the french bac? or IB?

Definetly go and visit. I did an overnight at Norwich at the end of March in my Junior year. Really liked it. I've applied to Norwich, VMI, and USNA. Even though VMI and Norwich are both military colleges, they are different. Norwich has both civilians and corps of cadet students. This works for some people not others. Seeing civilians party every night while your camped up in the barracks preparing for inspection at midnight on friday can be rough. VMI is all corps of cadets. There are also different leadership styles at VMI and Norwich, something else to consider. Both schools will get you the commission in the end. Can't go wrong with either.

If he's going to go, make sure he does an overnight. VMI has specific overnight weekends, I think there are 6. The dates are on their website. Norwich allows you to do an overnight almost anytime throughout the academic year. I wrote up a thread on my overnight at Norwich if you want to read it. I highly encourage the overnight. Don't just visit, do the overnight.

Continue researching specific aspects of the school. It's an important decision. Make sure it is an informed one.

The point of contact for international admissions at VMI is LTC Neil Whitmore

Marjorieli: I sent you a PM- my recommendation would be that an overnight visit is a very valuable experience. Personally I think that a visit while the Rats are still in the Ratline is the most valuable time to visit VMI- they have overnight visits scheduled in Early Sept; Oct; Nov; & Dec. If you can you ought to try and coordinate your visit to overnight then. If not- you still will get a lot out of a visit.
BTW: this may be of interest to a French applicant- VMI has an exchange program with L'Ecole Polytechnique.
Good luck to you and your son!

Paris - VMI - Norwich - A visit

Thanks for this input. Ben is in an IB program at the International School of Paris. But I see that a visit in the fall would be very useful for VMI... so I'll see if we can arrange that. There's definitely a consensus of the importance of an overnight visit - as I read through various threads...Thanks again - more questions to follow -
