Does anybody know the requirement's to exchange at the other Academies for 2/c year? Thanks

3.0 GPA
80 MPI
Company Officer/Company Chief recommendation

i think that's everything...

And I believe those are the minimums. If you qualify, there is also a selection process and each academy is more or less limited to an even exchange of cadets

we can send up to 5 to each Academy. If you want to go to Air Force you'll probably need to be in the top 5 that apply....

After recently meeting the mids on exchange from USNA it seems that USCGA accepted 2 cadets/mids from participating academies for this fall exchange. Don't know if that will stand true for the spring exchange.

So does this mean that there are only 2 CGA cadets at the other service academies? In other words, it's a one for one exchange?

Thanks BR2011. Hopefully I'll improve my grades to be competitive enough for the exchange program. My academic performance isn't the same as it was in high school. . .

Does choice of major factor into who can go on exchange?

My classmates who went on exchange had great times, but were happy to return to "home" at CGA. It's probably one of the few times that early in your time in the Coast Guard that you realize each service and service academy has a fairly distinct identity. You'll see it to a greater extent the later you get in your career.

Also, USMMA does not participate. They are on trimesters, while the other four service academies are on semester schedules.

I think he meant that there are only 2 navy exchangers at CGA right now.

And yes major does matter. You may be limited on which Academies you can go to or have to overload with an extra class because it isn't offered at the other Academies.

USAFA exchange

I know there are 4 USCGA cadets at USAFA this fall.

And as a suggestion, get as far ahead as you can in classes at USCGA if you go on exchange, since you can't always find a direct match for your required courses, you may need to take some "electives".

Thanks BR2011. Do you know if there is a way to look at which majors would limit which Academy I could go to, if I'm competitive? Maybe just look at the courses in the major, and then look at the other Academies course catalogs? Obviously NavArc is going to be limited to USNA

Thanks mnolan! I think I read awhile back that you had a DD/DS going to another Academy, right?

You will have training about this. Don't lose too much sleep at this point, just wait for the training. All of this will be explained by CGA personnel

Don't pick your major based on what will be easier to go on exchange with. Exchange is only a semester, your major will make up your life for 3 years at the Academy. You may also decide later that you don't want to do it. I had always wanted to go and probably would have been able to go as a 2/c but decided I would rather stay with my friends at CG. Just be a good cadet and plenty of opportunities will present themselves over the next 4 years.
