Since I noticed how the vision limits for land and sea services are different, could a person be medically qualified for one academy but not the other?

YES.

In short color blindness is a big player for the Navy, but not for the AF. Thus, the AF could take you while the Navy says No thanks.

More specifically...
All the Sea Services have very strict color vision standards.
For the Army, you must be able to distinguish between vivid red/vivid green for general entry;
The AF and Marines have no color vision standrads for general entry:thumb:

Myopia limits also differ between the services.
For Sea Services the limit is -6 and for others it is -8.
My son's myopia is just over -6 so he qualified medically for USMA, but needed a waiver for USNA (these are very hard to get and he was fortunate to be granted one). There are a number of stories on these forums of people who originally desired only USNA, but because of their vision, they changed paths and applied to USMA, received appointments and have been very happy there.

Effective 28 Apr 2010, that is no longer correct. This new standard is "Current refractive error (hyperopia (367.0), myopia (367.1), astigmatism (367.2x)), in excess of -8.00 or +8.00 diopters spherical equivalent or astigmatism in excess of 3.00 diopters {does NOT meet standards}:thumb:

Wow! So if I understand you correctly, Mr. Mullen, you are saying that it is now the same limit of +/-8 for all the services? If so, is my son's vision waiver for USNA Class of 2014 now more of a non-issue? Will his myopia of just over the old limit of -6 still have a bearing on his service selection options (as he has a waiver), as in the past, or do they all have a +/- 8 limit now, instead of +/-6?

You can email me that question with his full name and last 4 SSN. I will be traveling to the east coast all day tomorrow, but will reply tomorrow night. Larry.Mullen@dodmerb.tma.osd.mil:thumb:

Does that mean USNA will allow an applicant to have an excess of up to -8.0 and +8.0 diopters?
