DS had PQ exam today and was told eyes were not bad enough for PRK surgury and he could apply for a waiver. How many waivers are usually given in each class? Are there any other options, appeals, etc available. Any advice on how to proceed.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

not exactly sure, but i think getting a waiver for eyesight is pretty easy? especially is they said they're not bad enough for PRK. Probably fine

Well, I don't have any statistics, but mine came through.

I am also in that middle zone between PQ and PRK, and got the waiver.

I get my eye exam in a couple weeks, but I wouldn't be suprised if I fall in that range also. Guess we'll see how it turns out.

DS is a 3 degree at USAFA. Does anyone have any experience with this situation?
Any advice would be appreciated?

Wait and see, mostly.

Just make sure the clinic puts in a request for any required waivers. The thing is, they will probably submit them all at one time. That means he will likely be waiting until November/December for a final decision from big Air Force.

Does anyone know the approximate nearsightness (i.e. below 20/what) that is not considered bad enough sight for PRK?

Sometimes it doesn't matter even how good one's eyesight is. One of my sons, who is 20/10 (sees at 20 ft what most see at 10, so better than average vision) will probably be dq'd from a pilot slot because, despite his excellent vision, he has "steep corneas." Really. Excellent vision, no problems. Steep corneas. You can imagine the consternation going around with the fencers' family. GRR.

Fencersmother:
Did they just say steep corneas or did they give it a name? My son had a similar situation and was DQ'd his Firstie year. He fought for a waiver and ended up getting an Exception to Policy after graduation--he is currently deployed as a KC-10 Pilot. My advice to your son (if he has his heart set on being a pilot) is don't give up and pursue every avenue. My son just never took no for an answer.

Pretty sure it is called Keratoconus. I have a form of it.

Hi everyone. I am AFAMOM08's son. She forwarded me this thread and as you may guess it holds a certain interest for me. The condition that I have is the one aggie mentioned, Keratoconus. During my sophomore eval the doctors told me that I had "steep corneas" as well and told me that a waiver would be needed. This initial waiver is done automatically by the clinic, HOWEVER, I would not recommend just sitting back and assuming that the waiver has been applied for. This is their career and if flying is that important to them they need to take charge of it. They need to ensure that their waiver is being sent by frequently checking up on the status of it. Don't just take someone's word that "they are done automatically."

I heard back late in my junior year that I had been diagnosed with something called TPSK, Topography Suggestive of Keratoconus. They again automatically submitted another waiver for me. Then, in the fall of my senior year I heard of something called exception to policy. In layman's terms, this is where you acknowledge that you have a condition that is disqualifying (don't worry this admission doesn't effect a waiver application) but you are asking them to give you the pilot slot anyway. Hence you become an exception to an air force policy. As my mom stated this is the avenue I was fortunate to go down. If anyone has any specific questions regarding waivers, or the exception to policy process or anything regarding chances with TPSK or Keratoconus please let me know, I will be more than happy to help wherever i can.

Hi PTWOB08, I was wondering what the application process was for an ETP, I was diagnosed with TPSK which is a disqualifying condition for the AF FC1 flight physical. When did you apply for your ETP? Was i still waiverable when you applied? Thanks a lot!

Don't know the actual numbers, however DD had PRK at USAFA yesterday. Question came up from another C4C in my son's squadron(he is also a C4C) while we were visiting his squadron. DD's right eye was -4.25 diopter, left eye is good comparatively. Doc's told her that if her right eye had not been so bad she would not have qualified for surgery, since it was, they corrected both eyes. She was up and moving around shortly after the parade (surgery was at 8 am). Hoping she feels as good this morning.

phil84,

The problem with reviving old threads, such as this one is the person you desire an answer from may no longer be an active poster.

Such is the case for PTWOB08. They have not posted since Feb 2011. I would ask this question on the DoDMERB forum.

Phil84

I will forward your question to my son PTWOB08..it may take him a day or two to respond as he is currently deployed, but scheduled to return to CONUS on Friday.

phil84 - I apologize for the lengthy delay in responding to your request. They originally told me that it was a waiverable condition, however my class was the first year where they stopped awarding them to my condition and it became unwaiverable the following year. The exception to policy was originally brought up by my commander down at the airfield in the Wings of Blue. I had no idea what it was and he told me I should apply. I started talking with my AOC and he was ultimately the one who got me most of the details. You submit your package to them (if you have a civilian doctor who evaluates your eyes you can submit the results, you can include letters of recommendation from commanders or from family friends) and they will push it up the chain. I finalized my application in the middle of October and it was finalized and sent out of the academy in early december. My advice is to talk with your AOC and see if they can get more information on the current process. They are there to work for you. :)

I hope this helped, and again I apologize for the delay. I hope you are able to get around this and please dont give up on your dreams. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi PTWOB08,

Thank you for all the advice and taking the time to help me out. I also PM'd you on here with some more information and questions. I am not giving up.
Thanks a lot!

Be careful. This thread is over 2 years old. I don't know if PTWOB08 will be back. Try and contact his mom AFAMOM08 for assistance.

Daredevil, I will forward your note to PTWOB08 (my son). He is currently deployed in the Middle East and it may take him a few days to respond.
