So I took PSAT today and wen to sign up for the SAT at my school in Nov. (which is apparantly full !!!) so I signed up forthe one in March bt then noticed it said "REASONING Test". I assume this is different than a normal SAT? And should I bother taking it for applying to USAFA? Also can someone tell me when I would need my SAT scores submitted to USAFA by? Thanks.

First off, why don't you sign up for the test at another location? Why would it have to be at your school. Second, the reasoning test is the regular test. Have you taken it before? As far as submission deadlines, I'm not positive, but I'd assume most deadlines will have passed by March. However, I could be wrong...

If you have signed up to take the PSAT then I assume you are not a Senior.
The SAT "Reasoning" Test is the standard test with Reading, Math, and Writing.

If I was in your situation I would definitely try to take a SAT before the one in March.
It does not matter which school you take the test at as I remember taking it in a different school each time.
I took the Nov, March, and May SAT which allowed me adequate time to improve my scores.
There is also the option of taking the SAT again in the fall of Senior year.

I might be wrong, but isn't there also a Dec and April SAT. I might be confusing that with the ACT dates.

I would suggest that you take the ACT too.

Some kids actually do better on the ACT. The AFA will superscore both and then take the highest of the two. Do not confuse this with they will take the ACT M and the SAT CR, they won't. They will convert the ACT to the SAT equivalent, and if the ACT is higher than they will take the ACT for your par, likewise if the SAT is higher they will take that score.

It is a win-win situation for the candidate.

There is definitely a December SAT, I have the email from the college board sitting in my inbox,

Just out of curiosity: USAFA doesn't care about subject tests right?

Not sure what you mean by that. Do you mean SAT II's or do you mean the SAT breakdown for each subject test?

The AFA has stated historically, score below a 24V ACT or 490 CR SAT and you would not normally be deemed competitive.

I point this out because I think it is important that everyone understands with clarity there are differences between the two regarding the PAR aspect of the WCS. Forums like this can be confusing, so it is best to clarify whenever possible.

With me, definitely!
My friends just make fun of me saying the ACT is easier.
PSAT in tenth grade
165
ACT in 10th grade= 28= 192 to196(depending on which chart you use)
2 tests= big difference

I'm sitting on an ACT super scored comp of 31 right now.

Take both tests!
it can make a huge difference

How much weight is the ACT Science section?

My scores were:
-26 Science
-28 Reading
-33 English
-33 Math

oh ok thanks, Ill sign up for some other, so dont do the subject tests or what, im kinda confused on it...

Subject tests are generally for Ivy League and schools in the top 30. However, if you are already taking an AP or IB course that covers certain subjects (like AP US History for example), it could be to your advantage to go ahead and take the subject tests in case you want to apply to top schools.

I do not think subject tests are required for USAFA or other SA's?

My son was told by his AF counselor that they were not necessary and not really looked at during the admissions process. So there's no reason to take them just for one of the academies if you aren't looking at any schools that require them. Son #1 wasn't, and didn't take them (and still got into AF and Navy). Son 2 is looking a several schools through NROTC that require them, so took them and had them sent to AF and Navy as well, just as one more thing for them to factor in.

Personally I don't think it would make a difference if they're comparable with everything else you've sent - if you had a 780 on the Math SAT Reasoning, got an A in Calc, etc., then an 800 on the SAT Math 2 Subject test really doesn't tell them any more. However, if you got a C in Chemistry, then getting an 800 on the SAT Chemistry Subject test might show them that you at least had a mastery of the subject, according to a more national standard.

My logic would be send them if you took them and did well; otherwise, don't bother taking them just for an academy.

McCoy: I assume since you said "my school" you are not a home schooler. Please, use your parents' tax money wisely and go to your GUIDANCE COUNSELOR'S office. Should you decide to go through the application/nomination process to USAFA, you may want to be well acquainted with the individuals who staff that office. Besides, your school is undoubtedly a bastion of information on test dates, websites, etc.

www.collegeboard.com It's so easy!

As a concerned parent, I would suggest you really get a good grasp on DATES since these are of extreme importance in your future college career, whether it is at a Service Academy or a civ college. And, because I have on my mean-mother's cap, YOU should have a handle on these dates. Get a sheet of paper and either by hand or by spreadsheet, get the deadlines and dates in order, and post it in a convenient location - like your frig or closet door or next to your desktop.

USAFA will not need subject tests. They'll give you plenty of their own during BCT.

But please, do see your g.c. NOW, and while you're at it, contact your MOC and senator to see what they require.

What the MOC and senator require for a nom? I thought they all required the same thing? I have the dates saved on my computer. I have no problem visiting my g.c., but I don't really know what for... I know how to apply for the SATs and ACTs, but is there anything else i can really do untill March? Forgive my ignorance.

Whoa, your MOC and senators definitely does not require the same thing. Look into their websites and they'll list their exact requirements regarding information that needs to be sent up as well as essays, resumes, interviews, etc. If the information is not on their website (it will most likely be listed on their website) call their office's number and I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

oh, ok. I didn't know that. And should I do this around nomination time? Because I havn't even got to the PCQ yet...

McCoy, you mentioned you just took the PSAT, so I am assuming you are a Sophomore or Junior, is that correct? If so, you don't need to be worried about MOC noms yet. Sign up for the next ACT/SAT's that you can take, and if you are a junior and interested in going to the AFA Summer Seminar, (which would be a good idea) apply for that as soon as the application becomes available (I think its in November?) That will get you into the USAFA system.

Junior, yes. And I am definatly planning to sign up for the ACTs and SATs. And am also going to be applying for SS as well (December 1st is when it opens).
