My son has been homeschooled since kindergarten and as a result has done most of his math self-paced.

I am told I can provide the math reference as his homeschool teacher, and I do have a master's degree in engineering and sometimes teach math at the community college.

He is taking math at our community college this semester and his math teacher is saying she can have a reference letter ready in another week or so.

I am wondering if it would be better for him to wait another week or two to submit his paperwork (everything else is complete). Or would it be better to use my reference and get it done??

Would certainly appreciate any advice/opinions.

TIA!

Assuming you are his mother or father, I would 100% say wait for the community college teacher. They say in every application recommendations from family members are STRONGLY discouraged.

I strongly recommend using the outside recommendation. Look at it from the perspective of a member of the Admissions Board who is evaluating your son's file. I can't help but believe the member would feel more comfortable dealing with the outsider's evaluation.

While it is advantageous to get the recommendation in as early as possible, it is not likely that a week or ten day delay is going to be that critical at this stage.

Best wishes to your son.

As a fellow home-schooling mom, and mom of a member of the class of 2014, I concur with those above. Those outside references and classes go a long way toward showing the admissions department that DS can handle group instruction and college-level work. While my son was 3 Q'd early on, his spring midterms in Calculus and Physics at the local college seemed to seal the deal for him. Also, it is most likely that there will be some form or recommendation that you have to complete. For example, I had to do the confirmation of activities/classes. So, if it is possible to get an outside source recommendation, get it. All the best to you and your son as you take this journey!

Tell her not to get too far along with the letter since Admissions will send it to her in an online format to complete.
