This young man has been in our prayers since last Saturday's game. I spoke to my cadet tonight and he had not heard about it. I find it hard to believe that no corps-wide announcement was made. Does anyone know if the corps as a whole was made aware of this??

I know this will be unpopular but, I think the tragedy is not being mentioned because the player injured, was possibly injured with his [initiated] illegal hit.

My prayers go out to him, such a bright star.

No announcement was made. I know it was a severe injury but he isn't a cadet so I don't see why you would think an announcement would be made. While the Corps wasn't talked to, I am sure the football team was.

Question:

Flip jerseys. What if Legrand was a USMA player who is (for now) unable to serve on Active Duty. He is a Jr, so he couldn't just be discharged from the academy, or can he? I'm sure there is a policy for something like this, what would it be?

I'm not a recruited athlete, just a curious candidate.

On the contrary, I find it surprising that a corps-wide announcement wasn't made - at the very least maybe a request to pray for this young man. Isn't a cadet?? - so what!! His life is changed forever.

Sorry for belaboring this, but I feel that making the announcement and asking to remember this young man in prayer is a small act to perform, but it would say volumes.

I'm sorry, it may seem a little harsh to you but USMA is not a church. An announcement isn't made every time a college student is injured regardless of the severity. The only announcements of the type that are made are when a USMA graduate dies in the line of duty. We don't even have prayer requests for soldiers who lose limbs overseas. I honestly don't see why we would have requested prayers for this.

Out of curiosity, did USNA pray for this guy? And do they pray whenever other college students have injuries?

The guy was injured while playing against USMA, not USNA: why in the world would USNA have anything to do with it.

I believe the thought process for those who think there should be an announcment is this: player injured while playing against Army Football Team --> Army Football Team represents very publicly the US Military Academy --> US Military Academy as a whole would take an interest in the player and his injury.

I don't think it would necessarily be wrong to have mentioned the injury and request thoughts for him during a moment of silence or something similar. Would likely have to be non-religious in nature. But I can also see why it wouldn't necessarily be announced as well.

I was just wondering if this belief stemmed from a difference in service academy culture and perhaps the OP was accustomed to these prayer requests for things of this nature from his time at USNA. Just trying to find out the reason for his surprise.

Army Football will be paying tribute to LeGrand this weekend. The Black Knights will wear a red decal on their helmets with LeGrand's No 52 and a small "R" for Rutgers in tribute.
