Couldn't raise reading SAT scores

Hey guys. I was hoping to retake the SAT's in college in the hopes of improving my scores to make myself that much more competitive. I was told that if I raised the verbal score a bit higher, I would be in a different competitive field, and I figured I could do that because it's been about a year since I've taken the SAT's. At this point, I figured my mind would have matured enough so that I would be able to do much better.

So I get the scores back, and the only thing that improved was writing, which went up 10 points...

Does this make me look any more competitive? Writing's not even something most colleges look at, is it?

Peter, have you tried the ACT? My cadet (more of a math/science person) preferred it to the SAT. My other son (English/history/liberal arts bent) did very well on the SAT.

Give the ACT a try right now. Pay the late fee if you have to in order to get in on the next test.

I'll definitely give that a consideration. Thanks for the advice.

Actually, looking at the tentative schedules for the test, I would have to take it in my hometown (which is 4 hours away) since there are no test centers within close proximity to Virginia Tech. At that point, that would probably prove more of a burden as I still have to keep up my grades in college too.
