Historical story...
WAAAAAY back when dinosaurs roamed the terrazzo...and our shoes were brown and we had shoulder boards on our blue shirts...
There we were for the noon meal formation (current cadets, please try NOT to recoil in horror at that thought) and we were told there was a flyby approaching from the South...
And sure enough, a beautiful display of airpower...er...well, noise and wind anyway. A couple of Sh...er...Chinooks came...well you can't say they came "roaring" over because they're not really fast...but what they did was HUGE!
They were flying folks from the US Army PsyWar "group" or whatever they are/were...
And they dumped LITERALLY 1,000,000 "propaganda" leaflets on the cadet wing and our beloved Terrazzo!!! I have one in my yearbook at home...VERY well done! Listed all the losses AF had that year (it was NOT a good year) and the Army victories and of course the logical conclusion: ANOTHER LOSS FOR AIR FORCE!
Oh, the game? We STOMPED Army!
But it took the doolies a full day to gather up all those leaflets!
Superior "spirit mission" by Army that day!

Both cute, but small. We once dropped a whole plane load of ping pong balls that had "Beat Army" written on them on the Army parade. And didn't miss.Cute...but on a MUCH smaller scale!
Army did another Chinook propoganda drop last year. I don't think they had quite as many leaflets though!

I only have about 3000 hours in tandem rotors. What the heck are you two talking about?LOL at "power slide." It's called going out of trim. But yes, helicopters can fly in any direction, in or out of trim. It's one of the roughly 10,000 reasons they are superior to fixed wing aircraft.

It's called a side flair and done properly the ball stays perfectly centered. First off, do whatever necessary depending on manual or automatic rotor, to get the rotors to start programming aft (copilots kneeboard over pitot tube works great). Coordinate pedal input with angle of bank in order to keep external load perfectly perpendicular to bottom of aircraft (this is why one must keep the ball centered). Commence lowering collective and taking out AOB such that when aircraft is level the load reaches the vertical and the deck simultaneously. Truly, ballet in the air. 70kts to a hover in two, maybe three, A/C lengths. A power slide is probably the correct term for an uncoordinated Army maneuver.You know what a power slide in a car looks like, right?
Imagine what a really out-of-trim turn looks like. You'd be sliding through the turn, not flying through. It looks like a slide. You could accentuate the effect by terminating the maneuver to a hover.
I know you can imagine the maneuver. You've flown with at least one guy who left the trim ball hanging out the door.
A power slide is probably the correct term for an uncoordinated Army maneuver.
Don't think it is a loop because one would have to keep positive g's on the aircraft the whole time and those rotors don't look loaded. Unintentional? I would think that any maneuver that drastic would require a load on the rotors. Sikorsky had a couple of test pilots back in the 70s who looped and rolled the 53 and the 60. Never heard of a 46 or 47 doing it?Come fly with the big boys sometime. We'll teach you what an aircraft is really capable of
