As painful as it is to think about it, my parents really want me to have backup plans after the Coast Guard Academy. If I don't get in, I will self prep myself and reapply the next year. Does anyone have any good schools that one can go to that would look especially good to the Academy when reapplying? Thanks!

Mit, georgia tech, swarthmore, etc.

I think it has less to do with the school then with the courses you take and how well you do on them. Take calculus, physics, chemistry, english, etc. and retake the SAT or ACT.

Boss is so right...my son reapplied and didn't go to a big name school. In fact he went to a community college. He took a rigorous courseload, similar to what cadets take 4/c year, and did well. Retook the SAT, tried a new sport and did well, continued to volunteer, did another admissions interview, etc.

Good luck this time around. Who knows, maybe you won't need your back up after all.

If you are really serious about going to the Coast Guard Academy and you don't get into the Academy, New Mexico Military Institute and Marion Military Institute are probably your best options. I applied to the CGA last year as a senior in high school. I was not offered a direct appointment; however, I was offered a slot in the CGA scholars program which I am currently enrolled in. Basically we get a full scholarship to NMMI or MMI for a year and as long as we do well in our classes and get a good PFE score we are virtually guaranteed a slot in next years class at the CGA. It's also nice because we are making E-2 pay so we are probably some of the richest college kids out there. I am at NMMI right now and there are about six other guys here that are not on scholarship like me (called self-preps), but are still prepping for the CGA. This is good for them because they are taking basically the exact same classes as the sponsored preps so that looks very good on their application. If you have any other questions on the prep school just shoot me a pm, but I am very thankful for this opportunity because I know it will just make me that much better when I report in for swab summer in June.

Academics

US college ratings are now being debated over core requirements in US Colleges. As reported in The Washington Post several "Ivy League" Schools fail to provide college students with strong core classes in math, science and literature.

The American Council of Trustees and Alumni, a Washington-based advocacy group faulted Yale, Brown, Cornell, Amherst and the University of California, Berkeley, for failing to require students to take courses in more than one of seven core academic subjects: math, science, history, economics, foreign language, literature and composition.

And this is what makes the USCGA an excellent choice demanding higher standards for our future leaders. Strong academics, physical fitness, leadership and moral vaules are foundation at the USCGA.
