My son has an LOA to West Point. First round of nominations from senator is in and he was not nominated. The academy coordinator sent out a letter prior to interviews stating that if you had an LOA, and there was a chance that you were getting nominated by someone else, they would not be nominating you. But what if everyone feels that way and he is overlooked for a nomination?

I have heard of people getting nominations from the second senator, but so far we have not heard either way.

He had to miss his interview with our district MOC, but the coordinator said his file would still be reviewed and not to worry, with an LOA he would be OK--but that is not a guarantee, either.

Should he contact the other senator and MOC and let them know he was turned down from nomination from Senator 1?

My son has an ACT score of 33, class rank of 5/392/ 3.98 unweighted GPA, class president, varsity football for 3 years, Captain of the football team, varsity track for two years, medically qualified, Two AP courses last year (scored 5 on AP tests) and 3 this year.

His instinct is to trust the system, but I can't help worry and wonder if a squeaky wheel might get a little attention.

You need to relax for just a little bit...see how it plays out w/ the other noms when they're released. This is a stressful time, but they system works. Give it enough time; you'll see!
 
But if we wait it out and he doesn't get a nomination, we have no recourse, right?

Waiting is most definitely the hardest part, but its time to step back and let everything play out. He has an LOA, he is going to get nominated (as long as he is medically/physically qualified).

Worst case: VP nominates him.

When I was at SLS, one of the presenters at a briefing said that there has never been someone with a LOA not get nominated. He'll be fine.
 
Such impressive stats! You must have a great kid! And be from a really compettitve state but I bet we will soon hear from you that all is well and it all worked out. I can only Imagine the desire to check, check, recheck everything to make sure you have not missed anything! This whole processed has reminded me of when was pregnant with DS. I read and re-read that darn book, you know the one "What To Expect When Your Expecting"?. I kept looking for one more sign of labor or trying to know everything that was going on! I have thought about this comparison so many times in the last few months! Sounds like you have it under control but just need to hear some reassurance. That is the best I can offer. I bet I know what you want for Christmas!

anyways, I know your worried about not getting a nomination, but like many previous posters have said that LOA puts you in an incredibly good spot. You could be where I am....no LOA, not heard from MOC's .....

My daughter has an LOA too (WP has her heart), and her stats are very similar to your son's (minus the football thing). Wanna play matchmaker? Just think of the super human grandchildren they'd spawn :biggrin:

All kidding aside, I'm sure your son will be fine. Keep us posted!

I have an LOA to USNA, and I went to the three interviews (Senator 1,2, Congresswoman).
I thought I would receive Senator 2's nom, and definitely Congresswoman's, just by the way the interview went. Senator 1, not so much, because his interview was the last one (the other two were weeks beforehand), and their 8-person panel refused to make me comfortable. They asked questions about tattoos, drinking, cheating, anything out of the ordinary that you just wouldnt expect..
One was a question regarding the Abu-Ghraib incident, and what would I have done.
I came out of Sen. Nelson's interview head spinning.
And yea, when I got the rejection letter from Sen. 2, I was stunned, but sure that I'd get the district nom.
Then, after a week, I got a call from Sen LeMieux's office, and they asked me why I thought I didnt get a nomination from them, I said I had no idea. They told me that Sen. Nelson's board nominated me.
So, not all hope is lost.
And if it comes down to it, you could call USMA Admissions, explain the situation why you had to miss the Congressional District interview, and they **could** call the Congressional District and request you have an interview and be put in the running for a nom.
I say could, because, the clerk from my district told us this when I went to that interview; that each year there's always one person who applies late that the Academy is interested in.
So, just dont loose hope, and try all available options. Good luck to your son.

I got a little lost in this. I also live in Florida, and had the same lineup for interviews (different district though). Which Senator is senator #1 and #2? I am quite confused

Actually, all of those questions are very common. DS had all of those types of questions yrs ago, plus was it right to invade Iraq?

Every board is going to be different. Some will be laid back and some will be more direct hitting. Some will only be interviewing the candidate to see if their paper record matches them in person, so it is basically a check mark situation. Some will interview 20 for the 10 candidate slate, which means it is not a check mark situation, but the last hurdle to clear.
 
None of our MOCs held interviews this year. We received a letter a week ago congratulating our son on his nomination. The AFA website still says "Nomination Status: None". We're hoping that updates soon. At least the AFROTC says stuff like the board meets the week of Dec 6 with announcements going out Dec 27, so you don't have to spend so much time on pins and needles.
