My DS doesn't want anything for Christmas as he cannot take them back with him. What do you suggest we give our DS or DD for Christmas? Stuff for their Sea Year? or DVD's. He is a B split so he will be out during the summer.

Thanks,

My DS has requested stuff for his sea year. I'm also buying him another lap top and portable hard drive just for his sea project. That way he can backup and not have to worry about the computer that he was issued. I've read some of the other forums on this site and it seemed clear they are not to use anything on the computer that was issued to them. Not sure if this is true or not but figured I got a good deal on a computer at Thanksgiving. He has asked for 2 more boiler suits, t-shirts, travel alarm clock, planner. Hope this helps.

What about clothing from the KPStore?

Seriously, don't see what your DD or DS wants - what you want? Please tell me and I'll work to get it. Want something special designed - let me know. I'll do my best to create it and get it to you.

I'll be redesigning the store and updating the artwork on most of the products over the next few weeks and would love the feedback.

Simply search "USMMAonline KPStore"

About four years ago the school had ball caps with USMMA spelled out using signal flags. Someone wanted my hat more than I and I have not been able to replace it. If you are looking for ideas on what to offer I will put my vote in for a high quality hat with the signal flag graphic.

Thanks NU81,

I'm on it! Give me a day or two...

The hats look great, but I was told that I was not allowed to order one until after Christmas. I can't imagine why I need to wait!

License Plates. I haven't seen any since summer of 09. Also the 3 or 4 inch KP decals.

Thanks

how about decals that say, " My Brother (or Sister) goes to USMMA" . My girls would like to have one like that and cannot find any.

Some Christmas ornaments would be nice too! I ordered one from the alumni page but was looking for some others- no where to be found :-(

USMMA License Plates

Luv2Fly,

What state are you from? Many states offer USMMA license plates and those that don't have a path to creating one. I created the USMMA license plate for CA under their serivce academy program through the CA Department of Veteran's Affiars. It took the collection of a petition with 50 names of folks who agreed to get the plate. At last count (and it has been a while since I asked) more than 130 USMMA plates have been sold in CA.

Go to CA DMV then Veteran's Plates, USMMA is design "W20"
Here is the link to CA:

ShutterbugC,

An excellent idea. I'll get to work on it. I'll be underway for a few days but promise to have something to you soon!

what kind of knife

My son has requested a knife for christmas and I recall some threads from long ago where specific types of knives were suggested but I cannot find them. Can anyone make a recommendation?

Knives

The Colorado Parents Association (Under the USMMA Parents Page) has a SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT with Spider Co for great knives. They will also give assistance as to which one is the best for your Midshipman.

DD saved quite a bit of $$$ on Spider Co products.

'Don't leave USMMA without one!"

Study the Master

If you want to see what the most successful school store looks like and gather ideas, go the the Notre Dame Book Store. This store has the highest per square foot sales of any (!) store in the country including Tiffanys, Bloomingdales, etc.

While KP doesn't have the following of ND, there are a lot of ideas there such as jewelry, polar fleece pullovers for women, etc. that would boost KP's sales. I suggest studying what they offer, see if you can find out what that best selling items are and see if it can be worked into your inventory. There are lots of females grads, moms, gf, etc. that would like to see the offerings expanded. And remember, women buy most of the stuff men wear, so go after the women.

gifts...

Hi, we are in the same boat!
My son didnt' want anything, didnt' need anything, and said he couldn't take anything so we thought and thought on what to do for him for Christmas. A friend of mine (whose son is currently in his first year at the USMAA) suggested two books- one being a book on knots. She said he really read through it and it really "helped" her son a lot during his first year. She also suggested a hard covered National Geographic book on the lands and seas of the world... she said that really opened his eyes to what he was about to embark on and he really liked it.

another thought... we searched and searched for USMAA shirts and sweatshirts and finally found this sight....

We ended up getting shirts, sweatshirts, etc for our son as well as for the whole family. We hope to all wear our USMAA shirts at our sons graduation party in the spring.:thumb: We did that for our daughter whom attends Butler University and it was really fun to do!

The last idea we came up with was to get oodles of gift cards for our son. We ended up getting movie passes, Subway, pizza cards, etc. I even made up a home made gift certificate for him to be able to go to a spring/ or early summer concert. He's only been to one concert and he really enjoyed going, and it's too early to know what artist/ group will be performing, so I made up a little card that said he'll get two tickets to the concert of his choice this spring or early summer!

Those are just the ideas we came up with!
good luck!!!

Mrs. Ucchino/Ucchinomama,

It really would be better if you used a pseudonym.

That said...

Those are very thoughtful gift ideas.

Congratulations to your son.

Make sure he knows the school's job is to make him flinch, or question his desire to continue. He will be fine but it will be unpleasant at times.

My ds is thinking of spending his Xmas money on a spyderco knife. Great for mariners however since he doesn't even report until next July,,,,seems like jumping the gun a little. Do they have any use for them besides sea terms? And which model has been the most popular. He has read some reviews but hasn't quite decided which one. Personally I was thinking of a cashmere sweater for a special treat. :thumb:
