I'm 3 Q'd, got a nomination, waiting for an appointment. I applied for ROTC scholarships as backup and was just told I'm a sure thing for full ride at my first choice civilian school. But they don't want to award it if I'm holding out for academy. Aggh. What would you do?

This sounds very odd to me. I didn't think they would hold out on you like that. I think I've been told that you should accept such an offer and you can cancel later if you get in to the academy (inform the ROTC people as soon as you hear). Don't worry about taking somebody else's scholarship as you can rest assured they will give it to somebody else once you hear from the academy.

That is what I would do because I THINK the scholarship is not a binding contract this early but I'm not totally sure, hopefully somebody else can clear that up for you.

You were told that you are a "sure thing" for a NROTC scholarship? I thought "full rides" were tuition, books, room and board and as far as I know there aren't any ROTC scholarships from any branch that meet that definition.

Maybe piper means "full ride" not related to anything NROTC.....just a plain old full ride to a civilian school.

I would attempt to meet with civilian school if at all possible. Perhaps they do not understand that service academies do not offer appointments near as early in the calender year as civilian schools. If they do and they are pressuring you to make a decision, I think I'd accept. Then, upon receipt of a service academy appointment, you will have to decide what to do.......hang on to plan b until I-Day or release that scholarship, wrap yourself in bubble wrap and forge ahead with USXA.

All of this might hinge somewhat upon exactly what the conditions are that are attached to this scholarship. Do you have to sign something?

Jenny's right. Need some clarification. ROTC scholarships are not administered in this fashion.

In any case, trying to blackmail an obviously outstanding student with this move is totally unscrupulous and unethical. No credible institution would administer FA in this fashion.

Do tell us more that this might be clarified.

Liaison officer for academy applications (Navy and Air Force) is same person as did ROTC interview. He told son he is good bet for ROTC scholarship but wanted to know if he really wanted a service academy; and he'd have TWO WEEKS to accept the scholarship. If the academy was his first choice, they'd hold off on scholarship. What the heck? I hate this: we MIGHT offer you a scholarship but not if you MIGHT go to an academy...

Piper: How about some clarification?
Which ROTC program is the "detach commander" reluctant to give your son a a scholarship? Detachment usually refers to Air Force.

It sounds as though a different person did your son's interview...wouldn't THAT person be the one to recommend your son for a scholarship? This much influence/recommending on the local level sounds a lot more like Army ROTC than the other ROTC programs.

What about the "full ride" at the civilian school that your son was told by "someone" that he was a "sure thing"? Is it a full ride and who told him that?

Obviously none of us are clear, aglages, with the content of the OP's questions and circumstances.

Maybe piper will enlighten us..............

aglages: I am not seeing the second (?) post from which you quoted piper......is that from a pm? Maybe a different thread?

I'm 3 Q'd, got a nomination, waiting for an appointment.

As I understand it, under these circumstances, you WILL get an appointment. You are just waiting for paperwork. :thumb:

Agreed. That is one of the reasons it is always a good idea to make sure we understand the question before giving advice.

In the quote box of Piper's 2nd quote (next to their user name) is a right arrow. If you click on it you will be directed to the thread and original post. Hope that helps.

It happens A LOT too!

There are @ 3000 candidates with noms, but only 50% will get an apptmt.

You need the nom to be eligible for an apptmt., but you need to win it with the highest WCS on that slate.

Getting a nom, and being appointed are 2 different things, and we hurt the candidate by saying that because they have it they are in.

Yikes, yes Pima, it is destructive to hand out total mis-information. Maybe jbowman55 got confused.

There were kids and parents on here last year that were well qualified with nominations who did not receive appointments.

Ahhhh, thank you aglages. Now, may I ask how you got quotes from different posts into one reply? Gosh, I am impressed, especially since I am assuming you are more than 12 years old. One of these days I will get all the bells and whistles on the forum figured out!

It really is important that we keep the facts straight, and that newcomers or lurkers do not go down the path that getting a nom = apptmt.

For newcomers quoting is easy.

Go to the post you want quoted, use your copy tab and highlight the quote.

From there when you hit post you need to use the [ ].

First you write quote in between the []

Paste what you want quoted

Then /quote between the [ ] like you did at the beginning with quote.

To bold: hit CTRL B at the same time
To italics: hit CTRL I at the same time

Place the words in between the [, and ]

Hope that helps for our newcomers.

3 Q'd and nomination does NOT guarantee an appointment, especially in these very competitive years we've been experiencing. There are many candidates each and every year who are 3 Q'd with multiple noms who are not offered appointments.

If each MOC nominates TEN candidates for ONE slot - it's curious how 50% of the nominees get appointments. I would think it would be a considerably lower percentage. But I don't know. That's just the way it seems to me.
