Hello, my name is John and I am a freshman at UC Irvine, and I have received an LOA for West Point. I was just wondering, how low can your grades for college be to keep your appointment to West Point? I'm passing all of my classes, but just recently, I got an unexpected grade on my final exam for a class. It dropped my grade to a D+, but I still receive units for it, and it is still considered passing. I am going to get down to the bottom of my final exam result because I feel I did better on it, but in the case that a D+ is my final grade, I'm just wondering: Am I in danger of having my appointment taken away from me?

An LOA is not the same thing as an appointment. You only say you have received an LOA for USMA, and the appointment that may follow an LOA is contingent, usually among other things, on continued excellent work in school. It says so right on it. That is normally construed as not failing anything for high school students, and since your school recognizes D+ as passing, I think that would mean you are okay but the standards may be different for college students.

Call Admissions, write them a letter, send them an email. Talk to them. No one on here can give you a definitive answer to ease your mind, but someone there can!

AKH, when you say it is normally construed as not failing anything, where do you get this information? I'm just wondering how people know? Do individuals from West Point say this?

After I was given an appointment I recieved an email from my liason officer that said I just couldnt get a DUI, get hurt, or recieve and D's or F's and I'd be fine. I would definitely go and ask admissions though, but what you should do first is try to sweet talk your teacher to raise the grade to a C.

Once you determine that the D+ is definitely your semester grade, heed AKH's advice and contact either your MALO/FFR or your Admission's officer at West Point. If that is your final grade, Admissions is going to see it anyway when they get your 1st Semester college transcript, so it is in your best interest to contact them first and voice your concerns.

It may be a problem. It may not. But only your admissions folks can tell you that.
It may not be so black and white which is why no one on these forums can answer your question.
It may also depend on what class this is (advanced physics v. bowling).

Make that contact so you don't fret about it over your Christmas break! :thumb:

Dodgers Fan, were you in high school or college? And I'm afraid to ask admissions because I don't want them to know about the situation :/

They're going to find out when they see your transcript.... mise well break it to them first. You on the phone can defend yourself a lot better than a piece of paper....
Good luck

Agreed. Try to sort it out with your teachers by finding out if you truly did get the grade you deserved since you seemed to skeptical about the results. If you find out no mistake was made, call and sort it out that way. Bad news don't get better with time.

but what you should do first is try to sweet talk your teacher to raise the grade to a C.

Is that what you plan on doing at USMA?
