How difficult is it to get your first choice upon graduation? I really want infantry. Also I have heard of guys that attend ranger school between their 3rd and 4rth years. How hard is it to get the opportunity to go to ranger while at west point?

It depends on what your choice is. Your performance while at USMA while determine what branch you will serve in.

Cadets are currently not able to go to Ranger School, however, many IN LT's go after graduation depending on BOLC and other timeline events.

USMA cadets can take the pre req ranger course, if that's what you're talking about.

Sorry you're right. I was basing that off of Craig Mullaney's account in The Unforgiving Minute(a must read if you're interested in the academy), but i just remembered that he actually doesnt attend until after graduation not between 3rd and 4th. I just recieved an appointment btw:biggrin: But really how competive is it for an infantry MOS? Its not that I doubt my ability to graduate in good standing, I just dont want to graduate and get screwed into air defense artillery or something I dont want to do because i didnt graduate in the top 20% of the class.

After Branch Night this past fall, BG Rapp posted on his Facebook page that 78% of cadets received their first choice and almost 95% received one of their top three choices.

It's important to remember in all this that you don't actually know what you want to do. You THINK you know, but that decision is a long way off and there is a lot of reality to be dealt with between then and now. Focus on your near-term challenges, and remember that you will very likely get what you want with hard work. There are lots of amazing opportunities in the Army. Keep an open mind as you tackle those challenges and you'll be surprised at the opportunities that present themselves and the path you end up taking.
