I have the preference of going into the Sea Services but also want to check out USMMA. Would it be a bad idea to apply to SLS and possibly turn it down for the summer seminar programs at the other academies?

Financially, I plan on choosing 2 out of the 3 If I am that lucky to be accepted to all 3.

You mean "choosing 2 out of the 4 If you are lucky to be accepted to all 4."

Seems kind of odd when you mention your preference for the "sea services" yet you are thinking about SLS instead of AIM?

Right now, only AFA and WP have Summer Seminar apps that are open online.
I meant USMA not USMMA on the thread post

I was solid, no doubt USAFA. Went to USAFA SS and USMA SLS and didn't even end up applying to USAFA because I was able to see that it wasn't for me, and the Army most definitely was.

Go to both if you get the chance.

I have a friend who only went to Navy's summer program and not SLS. They brainwashed him into only wanting to go there :(

If you're unsure as to which academy is for you, it's a good idea to attend more than one if you can.

I had an experience similar to mtnman. Before I attended SLS, NASS, and Air Force's SS, USNA was my first choice school, followed by USAFA, and then USMA. After attending all three programs my USMA became my second choice school (and I really thought hard about why USNA was in the number 1 spot). I was no longer interested in USAFA.

I did not notice any of the "brainwashing" at NASS. Sure, at the summer programs each Academy the Midshipmen/Cadets pushed the school spirit. For example, at USMA we would go out of our way to go through the "Beat Navy" tunnel, and at USNA we got the opportunity to participate in Blue and Gold. I felt as if the experience allowed me to get a feel for the atmosphere of the each Academy.

SLS

I do not think SLS helps you in your admission standing to West Point. In fact, having a Cow conduct your interview might not be helpful and the CFA test adminstered then is often somewhat more difficult as the cadet administering the test will be fanatical about correct form and so on.

The only use for SLS, and it is a very "big" positive and makes it worthwhile attending is for you to understand better and reflect upon your decission to seek admission. Use it for this purpose.

Ocassionally a attendee has the SLS experience leading to an LOA, but almost always they would have received the LOA in anycase. I have not found anyone's SLS experience being a negative for the subsequent application in the senior high school year.

A very serious thought offered is use the SLS experience to "challenge" your decission to seek admission to West Point and that might mean that those convinced they want to go to West Point might actually go and attend the Navy SLS program, or Air Force. Also, Boys State counts far more in admissions eyes than the SLS which has usually almost no effect for good or for bad.

So think about using the time to check out Navy and always choose Boys State over SLS if there is a time conflict.

You need to switch your focus.

The question you need to answer is what do I want to do in the military, not which service acdemy should I want to attend? Sure, if your don't, attend the service academy you like the best as all service acadmies will prepare to become a good military officer.

Suppose you like the Navy uniform, like the town of Annapolis, or the "atmosphere" and etc so you pick Navy. But have you considered how you would like being a naval aviator, surface warfare officer, submariner, or being a Marine Corp Infantry Officer?

There are many cadets/midshipmen that will accept and be successful with whatever military assignment they get after graduation and have a long successful military career. At the same time there are many cadets/mishipmen just waiting to get out the military as soon as they can after gradation.

Right MemberLG.....the service lasts longer than the academy time and may lead into a military or non military career.......impacting your entire adult life.

A side note,

Both USMA and USNA offer Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) test during SLS. I believe it is mandatory. For USMA, you can take CFA only once and need a wavier to retake it. So, if you accepted into SLS. Starting preparing for your CFA.
