Contacting Coaches

Hi. I am a high school junior who is very interested in the CGA. I have been in contact with my AAP and admissions officer for over a year, and I am aware that contacts should be made with coaches. I visited the Academy this summer and toured the campus, but did not talk to the coaches as I was just entering junior year. How would I do this? When should I do this; AIM (if I get in)? How do they evaluate me? (I am on my high school tennis team (varsity sport) and I am very involved in music as a trumpet player).

I attended the AIM program this past summer, and for lunch one day we all ran down to this grassy area near the sport fields and had a chance to meet with coaches from almost every sport; we got to ask them questions and we gave them our contact info and position.

you can fill out a recruiting questionnaire on that page, that's what I did for softball, and the coach contacted me shortly afterwards... that's a good way to start off a conversation with them
 
Thanks. I filled out the "front rush" form via the cga website a few months ago and did not get a response so I tried again a few weeks ago. Did it go through? Would it be beneficial to get in touch with the music/band director before AIM (if I get in)?

I believe it's always good to get in touch with anyone you can at the academy, whether you get into AIM or not. You never know who can end up helping you get into the academy.

And remember, getting into AIM does not guarantee admission into the academy, and not getting into AIM does not mean you won't get into the academy. I was actually told by one of my cadre this summer that for AIM, they just take all qualified candidates and basically "pick out of a hat" for who gets in or not.

Your cadre was grossly incorrect.

Really? That what he was telling us all week long. But maybe that's because he was mad that his brother didn't get into AIM when all of us did... :wink:

CWO Edwards is an amazing person. I am in Windjammers and he really cares about all of the people in the program. Unfortunately, he is retiring in July and we will have a new Music Director. But both people who put in for the job are supposedly really good as well. If you have any questions about Regimental Band or Windjammers, I'd be happy to help.
 
Depending on the sport (soccer in my case), we started e-mailing coaches to ask for them to come watch us play in showcases, primarily focusing on junior year. Check the NCAA rules for the recruiting rules for your sport, but as long as you're the one initiate the contact by e-mail before a certain date, you should be fine. I then met the coaches again at the respective Academies' Summer Seminars and again at the sports camp one held although I don't necessarily recommend that all that much as the focus is more on younger kids then recruiting with the Academies.
