Majority of mids that I've seen around qualify "expert" with the rifle and pistol quals as signified by the E on the two Navy weapons ribbons worn. Are such standards for expert really difficult to meet?

Marksman isn't hard. Expert isn't easy.

It may be the last time you pick up a rifle or pistol in the Navy....enjoy it.

In my day, qualifying "Expert" was a temporary qualification. You had to qualify as an "Expert" two times in a row to make the silver "E" permanent. Is that still the case?

Many mids signed up to shoot again at some point in their Naval Academy stay in order to make the Plebe Summer "E" permanent for their career. I remember doing that myself.

Not sure. To carry, at least in the Coast Guard, you need to have current qualifications. While you may wear the ribbon (of if you're expert, the medal), that does not mean you are currently qualified. I work a desk now. I have rifle and pistol, but I have been qualified in well over a year. To make it even more interesting....in the Coast Guard, stateside we use Sig40 while overseas we use the 9mm (because it is a NATO round). The two require different qualifications. You're qualified on one of the other. They carry a different number of rounds and feel VERY different to shoot. I'm partial to the Sig....it has more stopping power, but it feels....better, to shoot. There is also "Sharpshooter" between Markman and Expert.

Not to revive a dead thread (which I am), does anyone know the standards for qualifying "Marksman" or "Expert"?
I was just wondering.

9MM

Possible Score: 240
Expert: 228-240
Sharpshooter: 204-227
Marksman: 180-203

M16

Possible Score: 200
Expert: 170-200
Sharpshooter: 160-169
Marksman: 140-159

For Mids who've spent much time shooting firearms, I'm told this is pretty simple to merit those "E" pins.

9MM

Possible Score: 240
Expert: 228-240
Sharpshooter: 204-227
Marksman: 180-203

M16

Possible Score: 200
Expert: 170-200
Sharpshooter: 160-169
Marksman: 140-159

How do you get those scores? Meaning, what's the test?

Our mid was pretty proud of his weapon ribbons when he came home for Thankgiving break. This will probably go down in family lore, but, my husband and I aren't big hunters even though I grew up with a dad who did all those things. We are pretty much city slickers! For years we resisted getting DS a BB gun, telling him that he would shoot his eye out. Couldnt figure out how he got so good at shooting until my dad fessed up over Thanksgiving that everytime DS would go out to their place over the years, my dad set up all kinds of targets and taught him to shoot his old Red Ryder. For Christmas this year, Santa brought DS and his sister a pair of Red Ryder BB guns! (if you cant beat em, join em!)

My DD qualified SS having never fired a gun in her life. Good eyes and a steady hand.

One of my roommates in college was former Marine on the MC pistol team. He was very good. But still, he related his attempt to make the Olympic Team; 250 guys show up for 2 slots...shoot until you miss the center circle...look around...if there's more than one other guy...go home.

Truly, God works in odd ...and sometimes subversive ways! Go GRANDADDY! :thumb:

And I'm not talking about the Rose Bowl:rolleyes::wink:

Still, Left Coasters must be wondering how your expert marksman failed to end up a gun-slinging mass murderer in love with AK-47s and Browning A-Bolts!:yllol::screwy:

And how many ribbons do they loose if they go Marine? They get to keep some Rifle and Pistol but some navy disapear? I Think.

Marines don't recognize the Rifle/Pistol Ribbon/Medal. They earn "badges" for each (that's the silver item(s) hanging off their left breast pocket).
