Suggested Reading for USNA

I received a kindle for Christmas and I was wondering about any suggested books? I would like to read anything ranging from USNA, service academies, marine/naval stories, anything you think is an informative or entertaining read. Thanks!

Right now, I'm reading Duty, Honor, Country: A History of West Point by Stephen E. Ambrose. Although it's mainly about USMA, I would strongly recommend that anyone wishing to go to a service academy read it. It gives a wonderful history of how the service academies began, how they (mainly USMA) have transformed throughout the years, and how they have contributed much to our way of life. Great read overall!

DS (a Plebe) requested Lone Survivor for Christmas (and he usually NEVER reads voluntarily, lol), its supposed to be a great read!

Great idea to start reading up. Lone Survivor was a great read and is complimented by Plaster's books on Vietnam SOG warfare. I read by Author (Keegan, Ambrose, McCullough, etc.) as much as by Subject (WWII infantry (my father) and Navy (my wife's family) are focuses). If you haven't read Profiles in Courage, I recommend it. A major interest for me when reading is to understand the thinking of leaders. I didn't much like SLA Marshall's writing. I liked Col. Hackworth's books. Dark Waters and Blind Man's Bluff are two good submariner books. I want to read on Halsley. The Forgotten Solider, Infantry Attacks (Rommel), War as I Knew It (Patton), American Cesar (MacArthur).
I've never read it, but The Art of War (Sun Tzu) is widely recommended. Good Luck!

Excellent book. I'm Navy all the way but I read it and found it an interesting read, and it gave me a great perspective on Army life.

For books relating to service academies, A Sense of Honor, The Return of Philo T. McGiffin, and Plebe are all good fiction books based on their respective author's experiences at Annapolis during the late 60s. Absolutely American is a great non-fiction book, as is The Long Gray Line. Both are about West Point.

A newer book came out about the history of Annapolis, called The Long Road to Annapolis which is about why it took so long to create the Naval Academy after West Point. I've read the first few pages and it seems pretty interesting.
