how competitive is the state of WA?

hello SA community,
I live in Bellevue, Washington and wanted to know how competitive this state was compared to other states. At the recent AIM here in Seattle, i was told that washington was a fairly unique and good state to apply for the Academies because there was less competition. But i wasnt sure what they meant.
can anyone clarify this? and since i applied for SLS, would i be competing more with the applicants from WA first or the entire nation?

How does one determine this in general?

I am in Michigan and have had this same question.
 
I don't believe you can ever actually determine how competitive a state may or may not be. There are too many factors such as population, number of districts, number of retrospective appointees, etc.

Then again, despite what I've said, maybe you can determine, in your own opinion, how competitive your state may be. I live in Montana and by living here one can draw there own conclusions. For example, not many people attending Service Academy Day could be a clue. This is all speculation though.

Don't worry about how competitive your state may be. Like I said, you never can know. Plus, you should always be trying to compete against others around the nation.
 
It depends on a lot of things. I am from MA, one of the most anti-war, and liberal states. There is not too many people living here. Yet there is an Air Force Base about 5 minutes from my house. I live in an area where money is not a huge issue. I may not be in the most competitive region for nominations, but it doesn’t matter after that. Admissions compares you against the nation. There are an endless amount of factors to look into for nominations, as well as alternate sources (JROTC, AD, ROTC etc.). So to find out about how competitive you are all depends on things that it would be real creepy if I knew:yllol:

Some big things to look at:
1) Population of the state
2) How much are wars supported
3) Are there any major military bases nearby?
4) How good is your school system (locally)
5) Is your area generally well off, or struggling economically

Just my two cents:thumb:
