I know at USNA that mids are allowed a car at USNA after spring break of their junior year.

Is this similar for USMA? Can I have a car at West Point?

It is the same - you may have a car after spring break of cow year.

Due to the bowl game victory, Cows can bring cars after President's Day weekend this year. This is great for cadets in the area, but for everyone else, it will likely still be spring break. New car is sitting in driveway after Christmas break purchase...it's anxious to join its cadet in NY! :thumb:

I hadn't heard about this...that is great for class of 2012!

Yes, each class got some priv. Not sure what firsties got...they already get to be firsties!

So what happens if you live outside of New York and you would plan on flying in and out of the closest air port to West Point? Is there a shuttle service that brings cadets into the campus or do you have to get a taxi?

They get to sleep in until their first class every Friday after President's Day weekend. It's great if they don't have a first hour class.

There are shuttle services to the airports near USMA for 3 day weekends and major holidays. They cost money but are convenient and cheaper than a taxi.

Firstie- Friday staybacks
Cows- cars after Pres. day
Yuks- civies after COB Friday until recall Sunday

All- extra pass

Yeah, the plebes got the golden ticker :thumb:

Wow - can't wait to see the privs they get when they beat Navy!

I think it's the responsibility of said cadet's parent to drive the car to West Point on President's day weekend for said cadet.  :shake:

Yes, that's exactly how I want to spend my long weekend: driving 850 miles to NY, most likely in poor road conditions of which I have zero experience driving on...um, that's a no.

Well you only have to get as far as Pennsylvania and it's all interstate! :thumb:

How do exhausted, sleep-deprived cadets drive home for leave on roads that take every bit of my concentration when I am rested and wide awake? It's around an 11-hour drive from WP to our town and I know a firstie who drove home alone for Christmas, arriving in the wee hours of the morning. I would be a nervous wreck waiting for my cadet to get home! I guess you would hope to get someone to carpool with you, but my cadet falls asleep as soon as the car starts moving so he wouldn't be much help!

We don't get a lot of snow here and certainly don't drive in it when we do, so how do kids from the South learn to drive in snow on all of the hills and curves on the roads around West Point?

I am guessing since they all have cars, maybe someone w/ experience would drive if it were really bad...but my kid thinks he's invincible, so no telling! Mostly they just have to navigate to Pallisades Mall or Central Valley. The plows and salt trucks get out much faster up there than down here. They'll figure it out; they always do.

My son has rented a car and driven home several times in the last year. (11+ hours) One of our neighbors is a cadet also and they come together, sometimes dropping off other cadets on the way. He usually gets home in the wee hours of the morning, but he is usually up till the wee hours of the morning at WP studying, It is a lot cheaper than flying and he has gotten to come home more often than he would have other wise. He is coming home for spring break to car shop and then driving his new car back. One thing he is getting for his birthday though is a GPS, one time coming home they missed a turn and ended up going 6 hours out of there way, but they eventually got here and learned a lesson about turning around.:shake:

I finally had to buy a GPS to get from Newark to West Point after an ill-fated trip where a missed turn resulted in me driving over the Tappan Zee bridge several times! It was a crazy trip! Love my Garmin! :thumb:

Crossing the Tappan Zee several times?
That cost a pretty penny!
We avoid the Tappan Zee like the plague b/c of the cost to cross that thing. We head up to Bear Mtn instead. We don't have toll roads in our neck of the woods, so paying to cross a bridge or to drive on a highway is really strange for us.
You probably paid for your Garmin with what you save by not crossing the Zee.:shake:

Thanks, vampsoul, it sounds like it's good, but what does it mean?
Cows I can figure out, Yuks, I can take an educated guess, but what exactly is it that the plebes get??

After spring break plebes will be allowed to talk outside, uncup their hands, and will not have to walk on the walls.
