I was wondering if there is still time to fill out the application for a VP nomination.

No, the deadline has passed.

In order to be entered into competition for a Vice Presidential nomination, applicants must write personally to the Vice President during the application period of March 1 to October 31 preceding the year of entrance to the academies.

Applications postmarked before March 1 or after October 31 will not be considered.

Where'd you get your dates? Right now on the website it says the last date is January 31st.

You are correct. At least for USNA.

Several years ago, the deadline was Oct 31. It has changed to January 31.

I just went to the VP site and filled out the online application, is this really all that I have to do? I have everything done for my applications, but do I need to send letters of rec or a formal written statement saying I would like to be considered for a nomination?

I could've swore a few months ago you could attach the letters I'd rec directly to the VP application. Maybe I'm thinking of something else. My DS has completed so many apps they start to run together.

MOM2011: You are correct. The VP nom form was different in the early Fall than it is currently.

I believe the VP nomination info goes directly to the academies. They use those noms to pick up qualified candidates that "fall through the cracks". So...they are probably some of the last noms awarded.

So is it basically that each SA submits to the VP's office a list of their top 10 3Q'd candidates who don't have MOC, Sup, or Pres noms, and that's how the VP noms are generated?

I think it is reversed. I think the VP's office sends a list to each SA advising them that the following candidates have applied for a VP nom to X Service Academy. The individual SAs then select the nom(s) from the list. For example" If the VP currently has one nom available for the USMA this year; the VP office will send the list of those that applied (could be thousands) for a VP nom to the USMA and tell them....here you choose. The SAs get to use the nom on who they want.

............................. a list of their top 10 3Q'd candidates ......
Since the VP doers not provide an abbreviated list, only all who have applied, the 10 nominations for each opening does not apply. Only members of Congress submit 10 names for each opening.

i went on the updated VP automatic form last night and had trouble inputting an essay of 3,496 characters. i get the message that i have 4 characters left but when i click submit, i get an error message that i have to submit an essay of 3500 characters or less. anyone else have issues with this auto form? it's maddening since i tried to submit the app in both firefox and ie.

I'm not sure but when I looked at the VP's site this is what it said. I copy/pasted this info. Maybe that's why you can't submit.

Normally, he has one or two vacancies each year. In order to be entered into competition for a Vice Presidential nomination, applicants must complete the online nomination application during the application period of March 1 to January 31 preceding the year of entrance to the academies. The Office of the Vice President will not accept paper applications.

Anybody know any statistics on who gets them? For example, will they only choose an applicant who really needs the nomination, or go strictly on merit?

petzska,

My guess is that for the 2015 board I think you are passed the cutoff date, thus, this is just the method.

If you are trying for 16, they have yet to open the portal, and again this is just the method to block submission.
