LOA for a Medical Waiver?

Hey guys,

I am currently in the process of trying to obtain a medical waiver for USNA. I had surgery done back in December, and it is going me to take a couple months to rehab completely. Therefore, I don't think I will be able to potentially get a waiver until a couple months from now.

Therefore, I was wondering if it is possible to get an LOA contingent on being medically cleared. My application is complete and I have 2 nominations, a presidential and my congressman.

Thanks!

One of my candidates several years ago had an appointment contingent on a medical waiver. However, I don't know that it was done with an LOA . . . not sure what the mechanism was. The candidate cleared and was admitted.

While it may be a possibility, if so, it would be the first time I've ever heard of this one.

Are you in a "priority" group? If not, my counsel would be, count on it, when holsteins hop on pogo stix.

As noted, it does happen and usually under the circumstances stated. It happened last year with an LOA candidate who had everything but recovery from surgery. He never cleared. In a prior year, the candidate had surgery and had to wait for 6 mos after surgery. That happened in May and he got his appointment at that time.

The above said, it isn't a common occurrence.

Well, I'll be. You may not believe this one ...but there's a jersey jumping rope in my back pasture. Honest!

Good to know it can happen, even if it is severely unlikely.

Jerseys jumping rope must be more common than I thought. I know of three different current Mids who all received LOAs contingent upon receiving medical waivers.

Sorry for the thread resurrection...

Sorry to thread jack, but this is happening to me as of, well, today. I went through the entire process and had my surgery around this time last year. I am fully healed, and have full range of motion etc. I even had a note from my surgeon clearing me for any and all activity. I still got the DQ on the grounds of knee problems... (I can get the actual codes if it is important)

Just got my LOA today in the mail, and was wondering as to the validity given my current disqualification. Is there anything I can possibly do now to help the waiver process? For what it is worth, I received two congressional nominations and am eligible for the vice-presidential nomination.

Also, this is for USNA. Thank you so much!

This happened to me as well as far as getting an LOA with the DODMERB stipulation, and my best advice to you is to send in the letter from your surgeon to DoD and they in turn send it to the academy who makes the decision for a waiver, I got one and now I'm going, so maybe it could do the same for you...

The LOA and waiver process are somewhat separate. Truth be told, an LOA candidate with a nom is more likely to be waived for something fairly waiverable (e.g., colorblindness). However, other conditions (e.g., asthma) are much less likely to be waived no matter how strong your qualifications.

If USNA believes you're fully healed, you'll probably be OK. If not, not OK. It's a medical decision at this point.

Wonderful! Thank you for the replies.

I just called the admissions office, unfortunately the lady that I need ti speak with wasn't there, but fortunately I was able to leave a message. The thing that has me confused is that my DQ happened around February 20th, and I received the LOA yesterday, which leads me to believe that they were aware of my DODMERB status when they dispatched the letter. Am I mistaken in adopting this philosophy?

Thank you again!

I think what they're saying is that, if your medical clears, you're in. An LOA is always conditional on medical clearance.

The DODMERB status is just that, your medical status. The SAs look at that but not as part of the decision to offer the appointment. Only after they look at your record and decide "yes we want this person" do the look at the medical. My DD got the Conditional Letter of Appointment this year. While the Doctors records saying she was recovered was on the way to DODMERB, the LOA was on the way from USNA. Both postmarked the same day. Miracles do happen. Two weeks later the letter from the MOC and then the BFE.
