Winter Storm question

I am flying with DS for an overnight visit January 24. Considering the winter storm now, (hoping/assuming there won't be another storm following) should I expect that the streets will be clear for driving by then, or will everything still be at a stand-still? Note: I am from Texas! Thanks!
 
My son says the main roads have already been cleared from the blizzard last night/this morning. Who knows what the weather will bring between now and then; but as of this minute you would be fine! It is hard for us southerners to fathom how quickly they get things clear up there! :thumb:
 
The streets from this storm are aready passable. New York state has a alot of experience cleaning up after snow storms. NYC not so much:rolleyes:

West Texas Mom - there will most likely be another storm. Just hope it doesn't fall on the day you fly up! Good luck!
 
Thanks for the response! We will also be driving from WP to the other school :wink: in Annapolis that week. Our weathermen here can't seem to forecast with accuracy for this afternoon, much less 2 weeks :rolleyes: so I realize we'll just have to wait and see, but my DH is already asking me how much snow would it take for me to cancel the trip!
 
Yea when we lived there, there wasn't much of an issue as there is compared to like NYC in roads being unpassable. The people around there know how to take care of snow. Word of caution though, especially on like 9W, be careful as those roads can be dangerous even under good conditions.

Watch The Weather Channel they are usually pretty good about predicting if there will be a storm a week out. Unfortunately winter storms on the east coast usually travel up the coast and woud impact a drive from NY to Maryand.

Last year, our Jan visit was canceled due to snow ****ting down Newark. We were able to reschedule 2 weeks later, and fortunately were able to reuse airfare.

One of the hotels, I prepaid to get a good rate; lost that due to a no show, and adamant hotel that said no refunds due to the advance purchase discounted rate. Policy was clear when I booked and agreed to terms presented. No exceptions.

Lesson learned, no more saving $10-20 by prepaying to get the lowest rate. Have been getting good rates using AAA discount.

As for the snow: roads cleared pretty quickly. It's only when the storm is blowing in full force that there are problems. Son is a plebe, and he says that roads are cleared pretty quickly.

Just be sure to allow yourself plenty of time.

And WP is beautiful covered in snow.
 
I did my overnight the day after a major snow storm. The hardest part of the drive was we got stuck getting out of our driveway. The rest of the way was clear. NY knows how to deal with snow.
 
@Joshua !:9 -- You were not alone in getting a good laugh! Of course living in the Atlanta area I can attest after the last couple of days that sometimes the weather does sh*t on places other than Newark! :thumb:
 
Another option for you to consider. In Nov. daughter and I flew SWA into Albany. Drove to WP. Drove back to Albany then flew again on SWA to BWI--cheaper than the train. Once at BWI, we shuttled to Annapolis. The road to WP from Albany is straight highway--toll road--and drive wasn't bad at all. Plus the Albany airport is fantastic! It even has a special meditation room!

Daughter and I just returned from a visit to the Coast Guard Academy. Yes, right before the winter storm hit! On the last day of our visit, flights were being cancelled left and right and the Providence airport shut down. We quickly hopped in a rental car and drove 3 hours to Albany!! We were able to get the only flight out that morning. Moral: be flexible and prepared to make changes if getting home is a critical factor. If not, enjoy the forced relaxation and frolic in the snow!:thumb:
 
Thanks Lee2015! I'll keep Albany in mind in case we need to make changes, but hoping Old Man Winter will take a rest while we're traveling!

Actually, when compared to LGA or JFK, I am a big fan of Newark when traveling from the West Coast.

Stewart/Newburgh and White Plains are not preferred due to risk of connecting thru Chicago or DC. In fair weather they're fine, but when making reservations months in advance for the winter months, I'd rather avoid them.

We have a non-stop to Newark from PDX, and that is the preferred flight choice. There are also non-stops to JFK on Delta and Jet Blue, but I really don't care for JFK due to traffic.

As we have family in Yonkers, we make the trip frequently.
