Does anyone know of a skiing/snowboarding club at USNA? I'm wondering if there is an organization where a group Midshipmen can get together to take short skiing/snowboarding trips for fun. Thanks!

Oh yea. No idea if there is a club per se, but I can tell you there are plenty of Mids doing plenty of skiing. Know one group of 20 just back from NE ...and they weren't concerned w/ the Patriots getting thumped. And they are off to closer venues whenever they're able.

Son and friends went snowboarding this weekend and may go again next. When the weather gets warm, they will be wakeboardiing. There is plenty of outdoor stuff to do.

...just don't expect to do it as a Plebe!

I think skiing and snowboarding trips are part of the Mountaineering Club. My son went nearly every weekend as a plebe. Great way to get away for a while.

That's awesome! What did he do with his gear as a plebe? Was he allowed to keep it on the Yard or did he keep it at his sponsor's house?

Sorry but I have to mention that my son, a freshman at USAFA, enjoyed skiing for free at Aspen with the USAFA Drum & Bugle Corps this weekend! Must be nice!

It was a few years back. I think he rented equipment just for this reason. He did not avail himself to the sponsorer program but was an athlete and probably kept his parka, bib, and helmet either in his sports locker or with an upper class temamate. But not too sure about that.

Incidentially, he was not too keen on the idea of "wasting" his weekends skiing. However, being well aware of the "Dark Ages" and their effects, I pushed him perhaps more than I should. He never regretted it, looked forward to the weekends, and made every trip available his plebe year.

so I was a drag at USNA and I am a major skiier. I was told that there is a club, but also some companies do trips out to different resorts together on leave (like out west during spring break). I get what your concern is though because USNA is my dream school, but not being able to ski would completely suck. lol

There is a growing club. They've been around for awhile, they just added snowboarding this year, and they just got funded this year. Funding is good and bad. Its good because now you don't have to pay for everything yourself. Its bad because there is a limited amount of funding and thus a little number of spots now.

Plebes in my company can have there own gear, and by the time ski season rolls around you'll know if your company allows it plebe year.

Whitetail, Roundtop, SkiLiberty, etc. One company did a 3 day @ Strattan. My sense of this is that there's plenty of skiing/snowboarding, especially once one survives and escapes plebedom. Weekend leaves are a rarity on that end of the spectrum. Many just ski on over to the mall for a few hours.

Navy Ski Team

Hello,

I am currently a youngster at the Naval Academy right now and I am on the Naval Academy Ski and Snowboard team. I will probably be president of the ski team my firstie year. We generally take about 10 snowboarders and 20 skiers every year. To be on the ski team, you must have good skiing skills. About half of the skiers have prior racing experience, and the other half are competent skiers. The ski team is getting pretty competitive, we will probably be going to USCSA nationals this year if the academy lets us go. If you don't have a lot of experience skiing or snowboarding, then it is hard to do it the first two years at the academy. As a second class or first class, you could go skiing or snowboarding any weekend in the winter, but as a plebe or youngster, it is hard to get out without being on the team.

The only thing the ski team gets paid is gas. All other expenses including lodging, tickets, and food are paid by the members of the team. The main benefit to being on the team is being able to ski every weekend in the winter without having to waste the limited amount of weekends you are allowed to take.

If anyone has any other questions, please ask. I knew nothing about the Navy Ski Team before I came to the academy and it was hard to find people who knew about it. I would love to answer your questions.

About what level are the snowboarders on the team at?

Fair Warning to recent Appointees -- don't show up to I-day with a broken wrist, arm, or leg... That's a no go.

I leave it up to you to decide if the risk is worth it. My friend a recently commissioned 2LT broke his wrist last weekend snowboarding! Good thing he didn't do that just prior to I-Day.

My S broke his collarbone snowboarding the day after he received his appointment package in Janaury 2010. Next email was to advise DODMERB of his injury. He recovered in plenty of time for I-Day.
