I recently received a nomination from my congressman and called and thanked him immediately. however, do i have to formally accept the appointment? if so, how exactly would i go about doing this? any help would greatly be appreciated.

Slow down. There is a difference between nomination and appointment. Nomination will allow you to be apptd, but you still have to get apptd. It does not = appointment.

Now with that being stated is it a nom or an apptmt? An apptmt will come with a BFE from the SA that you were appointed too, and yes, you officially have to accept or reject it. A nom is not something you accept or reject, you are just being told they put your name on a slate to be considered by the SA.

Just because you received a "Nomination" doesn't mean you received an "Appointment". Have you received an "Appointment" from the academy(ies)? Remember: Every appointment REQUIRES a nomination; but NOT EVER NOMINATION leads to an APPOINTMENT. There's been a lot of discussion on exactly "How Many". But suffice it to say, that at least as many people WITH A NOMINATION will NOT receive an Appointment; as those that DO. So there is no formally accepting an appointment for you yet! You simply have a nomination. Now; if the academy(ies) have OFFERED you an "Appointment", and you forgot to mention that in your post, then that is a totally different situation. Best of luck to you. You made it past another big hurdle. (Receiving a nomination). Congratulations on that feat. Now, you have to wait and see if you actually are offered an appointment.

i only received the nomination, i accidentally wrote appointment as a typo but thank you for the information and help.

When my son received his nominations those came in the mail and there was nothing to do but wait for news of the appointmet......, it seems to me that it was about another month at least before he was called by the MOC's office to tell him that he had been appointed to the USNA. About a week later, the BFE arrived. From what I understand, the phone call does not always happen, but in his case, this was an unexpected and exciting bonus! (I know I have told this on another thread, but I accidentally erased the message from the MOC's office and had to call back and ask her to please call again and pretend that she hadnt called the first time so DS could listen to the message. She called back and the second message was even more lively, thanks to her good acting skills, than the first! :thumb:) We wish you all the luck.

For some it happens within weeks and for some it is 5-6 months. It all comes down to when they meet the board and their WCS.

I do not want smautone or lurkers or other candidates to think that the decision is within weeks like your DS after getting a nom. Their WCS now plays the big part of the game on how fast the decision comes down.

The adage at this point of your life is no news may be good news because it means you are still in play.

Congrats on the nom., it is something regardless of how it plays out that you should take pride in.

Good luck, all of my best thoughts and hopes, AND thank you for stepping up to the plate to serve our country.

OBTW, start wrapping yourself in bubble wrap, you don't want to lose the chance of an apptmt because you broke your wrist skate boarding !
