Pullups during CFA

I have a question about the pullup event in the CFA, I would like a response from a current cadet or maybe previous Summer Seminar attendant who did the CFA at the Academy under supervision.

In the instructions for the CFA out of the "Instructions to Candidates" PDF, some events have a specificly worded situation where that event becomes terminated, for example "Terminate the modified sit-up event if the candidate fails to continuously attempt to execute a repetition or rests in the “down” position," and for the pushup event "Terminate the event if the candidate lifts a hand or foot off the ground or touches the ground with any body part other than hands and feet."

In the instructions for the Pullup event, it never specifies such a reason for termination, it only says "at the end of two-minutes, give the command “STOP” and record the number of correctly executed repetitions."

I have always assumed that you couldn't let go of the bar during that event and would have to rest in a dead hang. I'm in no way looking for an easy way out, which is why I'm asking for input from someone who did the CFA at the academy, I want to know how they do it there. If I'm able to drop off the bar to shake off my arms for a second then jump back up for a few more pullups, my score will be much better. If not, I'll keep doing them as I have been.

No, if you let go, the cadets will assume you're done from when I when I was at USMA's. That said at the USAFA seminar, the CFA will only be a practice one and odds are you willdo the events out of order (I did). You won't be able to use the USAFA summer seminar scores for your application. Only at USNA and USMA's would you be able to use it as an official one

And we also ran an extra tenth of a mile for CFA at USAFA SS.

I appreciate the response, but I'm not asking for Summer Seminar. I'm a senior, I'm asking this for the CFA I will be submitting in the next week or two :yllol:

If I'm doing it with my coach, would I be able to drop off the bar then go back?

You still shouldn't be able to. If you let go, you should be done. Just like with the push-ups if you exit front lean rest position, you are done.

Sorry, you asked for someone who had taken it under Academy supervision so I assumed you were asking in reference to the Seminar itself.

No. If you let go of the bar, the event is over.

No problem, I was just looking for how they do it at the Academy, so the scores I report on my application are accurate in the way I'd be doing it again at BCT.

It looks like I won't be letting go of the bar then, oh well. The dead hang is sort of like a rest

RyWalk,

You know the online application period ends on the 31st of January correct?

Where'd you see that? All my sources, including the online application, say Feb. 15th

I'd like someone to correct me if I'm wrong, but that looks like it only applies to new applicants. I guess the deadline to begin the Application is the 31st, then the deadline to complete it is Feb 15th.

My status is candidate, and my application says I have until the 15th.

In regards to the pullup things, since it says you can't take your hands off the bar does this mean you cannot let go with one hand for a second to regrip? I always find my hands start to slip and I have to regrip the bar... I would think that'd be okay?

Yeah, I'm waiting to push my scores either up to average or above average. I'm doing my own at-home intensive CFA training.

And the funny thing is, it never says you can't let go of the bar. But to keep your method similar to the Academy's method, where you will be retested, you don't want to drop off the bar. As for adjusting your hands, I do that a lot if I rest in a dead hang, to get my hands back above the bar. Just don't drop off the bar, readjust one hand at a time quickly while hanging there.

Yeah, I wouldn't think readjusting your hands quick would matter as long as your not touching the ground, and by the way I don't think your allowed to stop while your hanging down, if you have to stop for a second i believe you have to do it in the up position on the bar?

The cadets were sticklers when I took it at USMA. You couldn't take your hands off the bar at all once the event started. That said, your gym teacher probably won't know the difference and its up to you to determine how you will run it

You have until February 15, it says it right there on the application page. Besides this I have been told by my admissions counselor and my ALO. they told me i could get it done February 14th and I would be fine, so dont worry, but definitely get it done ASAP.

Yeah, as soon as I can get good scores (and I don't mean perfectionist scores, I'm shooting for average on a couple events at this point) I'll send that sucker in. Trust me, I'm ready to be done with it and get on with my senior year :shake:
