Finish the year at a university if appointed?

Hi all,

I am applying to USNA Class of 2015. I applied last year during my senior year of high school and ended up being 3 Q'd with a nomination, but unfortunately I did not receive an offer of appointment. Currently I am a first year student at the University of California Santa Barbara. My application is complete and I have received another nomination from my MOC. My BGO tells me that my application is much stronger this year than last, so I am hopeful that things will work out this time around. I was wondering, if I receive an Offer of Appointment this time around, do I need to take classes here at Santa Barbara during my last quarter in the spring? I know that USNA does not transfer credit from previous four year universities and instead places you into classes based on validation tests during plebe summer. I am already taking advanced classes this year because of all my AP tests and I am almost at Junior level standing based on my credits. I am taking advanced level chemistry, physics, and calculus, so I am fairly confident that if I am accepted, I will be able to test out of some of my plebe level classes. So I was wondering, is there any other reason to finish the year at Santa Barbara if I am accepted? I was thinking that if I do in fact receive an Offer of Appointment, I could go home and work and spend time with the family before I-Day. Please let me know if you guys have any thoughts on this. Thanks so much.

I'm in the same boat as you. This year I'm at Wisconsin. I'm almost certain you should finish your studies. They probably even want to see your second semester transcript after you get accepted.

Same situation as well for me here in illinois, but you deffinatly should finish your semester, because the Academy will want to see your 2nd semester transcript as wel

To add to the above, "quitting" never looks good. And, while credits don't transfer per se, the extra courses may help you validate something. Finally, most colleges finish in early/mid May. That gives you 45-60 days with your family -- that should be plenty.

quitting once appointed

One factor is if you are on scholarship or paying out of pocket. Based on financial situation can ask academy what they will or won't care about. I am sure you are not the only one that ever had to make this decision. If on scholarship or not a financial hardship then finishing probably a good idea.

DS in college with NROTC Scholarship and re-applied. Good news college semester ends early April and spring classes not an issue. I was wondering what kids do if appointed early to mid January. Especially if finances are an issue. BGO mentioned another big year for applicantions.

Much easier/calmer this year than last.

Actually the UC's don't finish finals until mid June -- so DS would only have a couple of weeks with Dear Family:) But I'm sure if he gets an appointment he will make the most of those two weeks.:thumb:

jake,
I think you are asking about beginning a new quarter, not finishing a semester.

Certainly if you have begun a semester or quarter you would want to finish it, but if you are talking about beginning a new quarter in March/April that certainly is not necessary. Go home, get in shape and enjoy your family.
Good Luck! I hope you win an appointment this time!

yeah I am on quarters, so i will finish my current one in mid March and begin my last one at the beginning of April, finally finishing mid June. Ill call the admissions department if I get accepted and ask them what they think.

Finish the year, IMHO. You can be working on you Master's degree dying your last year at USNA, and maybe even be nearly 1/2 done...or even more! You will likely validate out of several courses. I would seek advisement from USNA re coursework, and perhaps try to change your final quarter, to optimize achievement if your longterm goals. Just my thoughts. Best wishes!
