Dear Service Academy,

I am a non-contracted Army ROTC cadet in the Mohawk Battalion. I am fighting for a scholarship this summer. I want to get LASIK in the summer is this a DoMERB disqualification ? I did my research for Special Forces and they allow lasik but it has to be done 6 months before training. If lasik is a DoMERB disqualification can i get it after i graduate from college. I remember talking to my recruiting sergeant when i was thinking about SMP and she said "When we go to MEPS bring the paper work for lasik". I am not doing SMP. I just need to now now if it is a disqualification. The colorblind test i may have a problem. I also looked in the MEPS/Medical handbook. It said if i fail the PIP (plate test) i will be given a FALANT test and if i fail that they make me distinguish vivid red and vivid green. Does that happen at DoMERB?

Thanks,
Cadet Kendziora

You have one of the Best Commanders in all of Cadet Command! He knows exactly how tthe issues surrounding LASIK. Go see him. Army requirements are that you see vivid red/green. The Army does NOT use the FALANT:thumb:

Sweet! Thank You! Are you talking about the Mohawk Battalion Commander? I really like the Mohawk Battalion i am in a special unit of ROTC called Ranger Company. It's the best training you can get and we are the best cadets the battalion has to offer. I know i can easily see vivid red and vivid green. I have one more question. For example if i fail the PIP. Do i request to the vivid red and vivid green test? Is it on a computer or do they just hold something up that is vivid green/red! This puts my mind relaxed now.

Take the test first and we'll see what the results are:thumb:

Roger that! Thanks so much! I'll take the test and if i have any problems i'll come here. Thanks Mr.Mullen!

Not to pretend I'm an expert, but for aviation's sake in the Army, sometimes you will be given a FALANT test if it's all they have available at your particular location.

AR 40-501 does provide FALANT pass/fail standards for all classes of flying duty physical.

Of course, Larry may have way more info on this...and by "may have" I mean "definitely has"

It's up to the Moderators
