I was wondering if you went through the ROTC program at any one of these colleges if you had to pay the tuition? Thanks in advance

Sadly- yes , unless you receive an ROTC scholarship you will have to pay tuition at VMI which is fairly steep if you are an out of state Cadet. I wish I could say that was not the case as money is a consideration for most of us. If things are really tight yet you are really interested in pursuing a military college experience, I believe that at Texas A&M , all members of the Cadet Corps receive in-state tuition which is a pretty good deal. Similarly, the Maritime colleges- (or at least Mass and New York) have agreements with a number of other states to provide in state or in region (reduced) tuition for members of the regiment.

It never used to be that bad. It certainly has skyrocketed over the last decade. I went OOS, with no ROTC scholarship, and my parents could comfortably afford the tuition. Now, I'm not sure that would be the case. :thumbdown:

So if I get a four year AROTC scholarship I will not have to pay for tuition? I do not live in Virginia. Thanks
 
Yes,
You will still have to pay for room and board though, which is more than tuition at VMI. I've heard that when you receive an AROTC scholarship though you can choose to use it on tuition or room and board.

You still have to pay for room and Board if you have an ROTC Scholarship- basically you will be on the hook for about $7,000 annually. That is SMALL compared to Tuition for a non-Virginian. Off setting that tuition, books, uniform fees and most other fees are covered by the Army plus your monthly stipend, and a travel reimbursement - so you are in pretty good shape if you get an ROTC scholarship. Well I do not live in Virginia so does my tuition still get paid for?

Unfortunately though the Air force is so short on funding this year that they are not giving out scholarships at VMI. We just got word yeseterday. Go Army, that's where the money is :biggrin:
 
Would you say I am a good candidate for four year AROTC scholarship and VMI admission?

-3.825 GPA (unweighted)
-9 of 53 class rank (small private school)
-23 ACT composite (I know this is pretty low)
-Cross country captain and varsity letter
-Student government
-Youth Group member
-Almost 200 service hours
-part-time job during school year and over 40 hours a week in the summer
-I am in all honors classes that my school offers and in 3 college credit classes currently.

That's about where our sons scores/grades were and he is accepted for this fall. Hasn't heard about scholarships though. (Army & Navy applicant) Check out their website. They post a lot of info. www.vmi.edu/admissions
on the bottom of the list on the right side of the page is the class of 2014 profile which will give you a lot of the statistics so you will be able to compare where you are at and what you need to work on. good luck
