Hawaii Nominations?

I got the no from Inoyue on Monday, still waiting to hear from Akaka

I got the no from both Inouye and Akaka, only because Djou had already nom'd me for USNA.

Quick question: Djou nominated 5 to USNA, and each congressman can have up to 5 at the academy. Djou was a one shot, one wonder congressman, so those were the first candidates he nominated. Does that mean I'm in, or is that just 5 regular old nominations?

The Animal:

Its 5 per congressional district, not individual congressman/woman. Those seats can turn over every 2 years (senators 6), so if every new person who got elected could have 5 of their appointees in an academy at a time, pretty soon the academy could be overflowing with appointees. So sorry, you're just one of the 5 nominees for now, but hopefully for you that will turn into an appt. by March!

Okay, but his replacement (Colleen Hanabusa) did not nominate anybody.

Animal--In your earlier post, unless I misunderstood you, you said the person voted out (DJou) had nominated 5 people to USNA--including you--this year before leaving office. So the incoming MOC (Hanabusa) wouldn't need to nominate anyone--her turn will come in the fall/winter of 11/12. But I'm guessing that prior to this year, other candidates have been nominated and are attending the academy from your district (whether appointed by DJou or someone previously). THe limit is 5 people attending the academy at one time per district (or state if its a senator). If all 5 were appointed the same year from one district, it would be 4 years before that district could nominate anyone else (assuming no one drops out). Not good for constiuent relations. Is it still clear as mud?

petermcd-DS received USMA nomination to West Point from Akaka and Hirono. He hoped to get a nomination to Air Force or Naval too. But he received just his first choice, West Point. He is on the national wait list and keeping his fingers crossed.

Does anyone know what it means, if anything, when each nomination shows up twice on the portal? DS received one from Hirono, and one from Akaka. The portal shows HI61 listed twice and HI02 twice. Does anyone else's show up that way?

Okay. Now my question is: where are you getting the fact that the limit is 5 people per district?

http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/steps4.htm

Click on the section that says U.S. Senators, Representatives, and Delegates. It says the limit is 5 per congressman, not district.

I found a CRS (congressional research service) Report for Congress online that summarizes it:

" Appointments made by a predecessor are considered part of the quota of a newly elected Member. Appointments made for candidates whose Representative changes as a result of legislative redistricting are considered as part of the new Member’s allocation."

Animal, you have a better chance of gaining the appointment if your congressman only nominated 5 people for the opening. Most congressmen nominate the allowed 10, making the competition stiffer. I'm guessing the academy website you mention is just giving a quick summary of the process and not getting into all the legal nitty gritty. Hopefully you'll get the one appointment from your congressman's nominations!

There is a difference in appointing and charging, that is how there could be more 10 people from your state.

Only 5 can be charged to the MOC at any given time...again, it is the position not the person when we say MOC.

Now, there are other ways to get in than just the MOC, you also have Presidential, VP, Supe, ROTC.

Thus, if 4 other people get in from your state using a Pres. VP, Supe and Rotc besides the 3 on the MOC's slate (2 Sen, 1 MOC), and 2 of the MOCs have 2 open spots each...You now could have 9 from your state who were on that 1 MOC slate, yet the MOC still never went passed their 5 cadet limit, because they were charged to different sources.

Again, charging an appointee to a source is different than just being apptd. You should not assume that the 10 on the slate that got in, all were charged to that 1 MOC slate.

If all 5 were appointed the same year from one district, it would be 4 years before that district could nominate anyone else (assuming no one drops out).

Theoretically that could happen, but doubtful it ever will because that would mean that one MOC had to wait 4 yrs for every cadet to leave before they would have the chance to do that 5 apptmts in one yr, plus there is also NAPs besides the SA, so they would be wasting kids time there if they didn't use the system. Their constituents would hang them out to dry.

There are yrs that the MOC may not have all 5 charges, but MOCs also look at the candidate's resume. If they feel that the candidate is not on par with the SA in regards to actually getting apptd, they may decide to hold off using all 5 charges.

They MAY have up to 5 at any given time, but nothing says they MUST have 5. The verbage is where it counts when you read things like this.

I got USNA to Annapolis, the only one I applied for.

Now I have Akaka and Presidential. I dropped the ball on Djou and didn't apply in time .

Yes, I get all that about all the different ways people can be appointed etc, but the poster I was responding to (Animal) just wanted to know if he was automatically "in" to the academy since his outgoing congressman only nominated 5 people instead of 10, each congressman is allowed 5 per academy, so Animal thought he would automatically be appointed as one of the 5. Hopefully he will get his appointment, it just won't be as simple as he thought!

USAFA. I was agreeing with you.

I was trying to explain you had it correct and they had it incorrect.

5 noms doesn't equal 5 apptmts.

Apptmts do not equal charge to the MOC.

You were right to say 1 of 5 noms is not an "in"

Again people will interpret what they want. Facts are thrown out the door.

FACT:

MOC can only nom UP to 10 per slate

FACT:

MOC can only be charged UP to 5 candidates

FACT:

Due to other sources the state can have more than 5 candidates, BUT only 5 will be charged to the source.

Again, charging is not the the same as candidates apptd. in regards to the number from their state.

DS appointed to West Point today !
