My daughter will need to have a prescription filled mid August. Where and how does a cadet get a Rx filled? Will she need a script from the Dr or will the refill amount on the med work?

How much do prescriptions cost at WP? Is there some sort of copay like we have with our insurance?

Thanks.

Physicians are available at the cadet health clinic and can write a prescription for her medication. Medications are available at the Cadet Health clinic at no cost, though I am not sure how many medications are located at cadet health. Most prescriptions though can be filled on post at Keller Army Community Hospital. There is a full service pharmacy located in KACH. All medication provided to cadets on post are at no cost for the cadet. I do not think she can refill her prescription from home at West Point. I would have her bring her medication with her and then make a appointment at cadet health and the health care provider there will then write for a new prescritption for her. The phone number for the cadet health clinic is 1-845-938-3003.

It might be easier for August if you just fill it at home and mail it to her.

When she goes to Beast she will have a physical. They will ask her for any medications she is on and she will have to show it to them.
For females on prescription birth control they allow them to keep their current prescription and refills are available for them at the clinic. There is a gyn.

For other prescriptions, in the past they have discarded the medication brought and replaced it then with a new prescription. Cadets then get the prescription refilled as needed.
There is no copay nor cost to see any physician, have medical tests or for prescription medication.

JAM is correct; once we have our qualifying medical exam we will essentially be given new scripts for any meds we're currently on. The Army does everything electronically so the prescription will stay in the system until it expires, and even then the pharmacy will be able to see every medication any army clinic or hospital has given us. Also if you receive medication through the tricare program (while on leave...) it will also pop up in the system if the need to have refills arises. Keep in mind though, we won't have a lot of time mid-august to take care of things like appointments or visiting the pharmacy. Not to say we won't be provided with the opportunity, but honestly we will probably be so tired and busy starting classes that we won't want too! During basic training, no matter how much my sinuses were draining from allergies, or blisters hurt from the rucks I never wanted to go to sick call. You may miss out on training events and it also took away from sleep )

Thank you all very much. This was very helpful!

This is good advice. Getting prescriptions filled apparently is not all that easy, especially during Beast and the first part of plebe year.

If it's after A-day that might work. During Beast, medicines are not allowed to be mailed.
It's not that difficult, but the New Cadet needs to be assertive.
Note - regardless of the medicine, the medical staff needs to know about it whether or not it is precription or not. We should not be encouraging New Cadets and parents to attempt to side step this, there could be consequences.
