Hi just a quick question which I'm sure has been answered many times. But do midshipmen still have fun? Obviously I know it won't be like civilian colleges but I'm just hoping there's still a bit of social life and gatherings. Like do midshipmen still have that little ray of fun and play and get to joke aroud. Im hoping for no negative answers either. Thanks!

They do these things called spirit night the night before football games where companys will sneak off campus and hang banners up in the town. Also go to youtube and type in naval academy snowball fight. That looks like a lot of fun to me. Remember though this is a military academy so "fun" is not on the top of the list.

A little "fun" and stress relief in the P-way( one of many )....listening to the laughter in the background the audience may have had more "fun" than the dancers....:shake:
Plebe dancers were paying off a football bet-debt made with upperclassmen...an academies tradition...

btw-my plebe was the best dancer...:yllol: a talent he had kept hidden from us...:shake:

There are also lots of clubs, teams and ECAs that provide a lot of fun (and work) at USNA. Whenever Mids are at their clubs/teams (not in Bancroft Hall), Plebes are allowed to act as if they were real human beings :thumb:

Concur with WhistlePig.

Having a POV this semester has changed my world. It's wonderful.

There are ways to have fun, both in the hall and off the yard. You will find them. Just be creative, don't be that plebe who goes to the mall every weekend.

The pictures from the Plebe shaving cream fights during Army/Navy week are hysterical.

Check the photos on the USNA Facebook page - even during the middle of Plebe Summer there are a lot of smiling faces.

POV = Privately Owned Vehicle? (or maybe Point of View? Power of Veto?) Having your own car would definitely be something to look forward to for 2/C or 1/C year.

If I remember correctly you could fry people for, among other things, "hijinks," defined in the dictionary as "lively enjoyment."

So no, apparently Midregs disallows fun.

My plebe went snowboarding with his company a couple of weeks ago! The dark ages aren't all bad!

Fun

Yes, my son is having the time of his life. "Fun" has taken on a whole new meaning! Work hard, play hard! :thumb:

Exactly!

DS has fantastic stories. He's a Plebe and I am so pleased he is seeking out the fun. Just have to be creative and have a good sense of humor, and a positive outlook. His Ultimate Frisbee club now plays in the snow so he's now a fan of snow-bee. The tales from spirit week have been amazing...and were good, clean fun (at least the stories he told me!)

Most kids that are used to partying in high school or a bit withdrawn seem to have a rough adjustment.

If your definition of fun is centered around drinking and hooking up, then you'll not have any fun as a plebe. If however, its centered around being with 4000 other smart, athletic, creative kids - you'll have a whale of a time.

(From the stories and press articles, once you're a 1/C you can have the other kind of fun too. )

Also the Academy puts on some awesome shows to help increase the fun level. This year we had a Kesha, 3OH3 (no clue how to spell it), and Goo Goo Dolls concert as well as a Toby Keith concert which was amazing! For the dark ages they had a magician (believe it was cool) and hypnosis which was hilarious. There isnt really much fun during plebe summer but you have some great stories that seem much funnier later on.

Did USNA pay for those concerts or was this some sort of promotion?

The Brigade MWR Fund underwrites those concerts, with mids paying a nominal ticket price. Big acts usually agree to a reduced price. I believe the Mid Store profits funnel to the Brigade MWR fund and not to "Big Navy" MWR under a special arrangement. So, all those Navy logo items flying out of the Mid Store during I-Day, PPW, Commissioning Week, etc., contribute to an excellent Brigade MWR program.
