Hey All,

So I've seen this online but it also came in my acceptance package from NROTC. Apparently, there exists such thing as Midshipman officers. Obviously, I am familiar with the typical 4/C, 3/C, 2/C, 1/C system that exists but I am unaware of Midshipman also carrying unique ranks, insignias, and designations on their uniforms.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, here is the link:

Can anyone shed light on this? What exactly is a Midshipman officer? Does every MIDN carry some sort of Midshipman officer title?

Thanks

That link is to sell you the rank as a mid. All cadets wear rank on their uniforms. The amount of stripes allow other cadets to tell if they are a C4 - C1.

The only unique items that I know of that cadets wear are forges. These forges are specific colors. For example in the AFROTC system they have AAS and Honor Guard. Members of AAS wear blue and gold forges. Honor wear blue and white.

Other than that the uniform looks the same...name tag, insignia and rank.

You're right. Here is the better link:

Scroll down all the way to the subtitle 'United States Navy and Marine Corps' and enlarge the image that it provides

As you can see, there is MIDN LTJG, MIDN LT and so on until MIDN CAPT. Here is the description from Wikipedia about this:

"Midshipman Ensign, abbreviated MIDN ENS, wears on the a shoulder the insignia of a star with a single horizontal stripe, on the sleeve a stripe with a star, with a single gold bar pins on the right and left collar. NROTC Midshipman officers have shorter stripes on the sleeve which do not go all the way around the wrist. Midshipman Lieutenant Junior Grade, abbreviated MIDN LTJG, wears a shoulder insignia of a star with two horizontal stripes, on the sleeve two stripes with a star, with a twin gold bar pins on the right and left collar. Midshipman Lieutenant, abbreviated MIDN LT, wears on the shoulder a star with three horizontal stripes, on the sleeve three stripes with a star, with three gold bars pinned on the right and left collar. Midshipman Lieutenant Commander, abbreviated MIDN LCDR, wears on the shoulder a star with four horizontal stripes, on the sleeve four stripes with a star, with four gold bars pinned on the right and left collar. Midshipman Commander, abbreviated MIDN CDR, wears on the shoulder a star with five horizontal stripes, on the sleeve, five stripes with a star, with five gold bars pinned on the right and left collar. Midshipman Captain, abbreviated MIDN CPT, wears on the shoulder a star with six horizontal stripes, on the sleeve six stripes with a star, with six gold bars pinned on the right and left collar."

Do you see what I'm saying? Anybody know anything about this?

Simple answer, it exists for cadets to learn via mimicking the AD world who is who in the command structure.

I.E. go AD everyone knows how the Commander is, this a way to say here is the Commander of Cadets.

I know others will probably take me out for that generalization, but to me there is no reason to go into great depth re: this topic. Once at the SA or ROTC, they will teach you all of this.

Knowing it or not knowing it now will not make you the Commander of Cadets.

I respect that desire. I respect the pro-active action. It will help you in life. However, making rank is also a blend of many aspects that are not purely academic.

Good luck.
