So here's the situation...I got an e-mail from a ucla.edu e-mail address. It was from an LT congratulating me on my scholarship to UCLA's NROTC. However, my status page doesn't say anything. But on top of that, I didn't apply to UCLA, didn't note it as a choice on my app, nor do I have any desire to go there.

Is there any chance wires were crossed somewhere and there is a mistake? What can I do?

They might have got your application mixed up or the might just have placed you at UCLA. You need to talk to CC ASAP.

Although it is different for AFROTC in the selection process, our DS got 2 acceptances to colleges he did not apply to...UNCCH and NYU. We came to find out that the ROTC det took it on their own initative to talk to admissions and have them offer a spot to our DS due to the fact that he was a match to the school and had a scholarship in hand.

It does happen. And, no he didn't take them up on the offer.

I am also very interested to know what happened here. My first thought would be to double and triple check that you didn't accidently have UCLA down as an option simply by highlighting the wrong school in the drop down menu. We have printed out our NROTC applications so we have a hard copy in case the website is down and a problem comes up.

If you really didn't have it on your list of schools then I suppose it's possible that all of your schools had full Units. I've not heard of that so I'm not sure if the scholarship coordinators then just pick a Unit when they award the scholarship. It's curious that they would pick out for you a highly selective school (with decreasing enrollment) whose application process closed 3 months (!) ago. If they do as Pima suggested and coordinate with the school to get you some sort of back door admissions then, wow! What a deal, take it.

Make sure you deal directly with the NROTC folks in Pensacola (hopefully P flying is stationed there) and not your local recruiter. If an actual mistake was made then respectfully request a transfer without having to wait until the normal transfer time frame. We have had good experiences dealing directly with Pensacola when a problem arose but be sure to be proactive.

My five school choices were all filled up so they placed me at an in-state school. Even if there were some "back door admissions" thing, I wouldn't take it. There are reasons why I didn't apply there. No offense to the school, as I know people who go there/have graduated from there and I know it's a great school. Just not for me. :thumb:

Are you requesting a scholarship transfer or just rejecting the UCLA scholarship all together?

Thanks for posting your school choices. Keep us posted and good luck!

So why don't you want to go there?

You are applying for a military commission. That means you will be told where to go for several years, and 90% of the places will be a lot less desirable than UCLA.

edit - just checked the admission deadline and it has passed already. Seems a bit ridiculous to award a scholarship to a school that someone isn't applying to.

UCLA will work with kids to apply after the deadline if awarded an NROTC Scholarship

San Diego State University, Embry Riddle, Texas A&M, VMI, and The Citadel.

The bigger question is if you've applied to schools that have NROTC that you did not put in your top 5.

Otherwise, as P-flying said, you will have to work with schools post-deadline which you have not applied to.

Everyone I've talked to in both NROTC and AROTC (PMS and PNS) have said that school choice is more important than Unit/Battalion choice. I believe they say this b/c being happy with your school choice makes a huge difference in your success in the classroom, which translates to GPA/research opportunities, which translates in four years to the highest chance of getting your first choice of ARmy Branch or Navy Service Community.

I say stick to your guns. If you don't want to spend the 60 hours per week at UCLA that you're not with your Unit, then its not a good choice for you. Of course I have no idea why you do not like UCLA, or whether your reasons would prove to be unfounded if you should actually attend, but no matter, you need to LIKE the school you're going to grind and sweat at.

Oh, get on the NROTC wait list at all five schools you DID select on your app.

I'm bummed to hear that the San Diego Battalion is full... I figured that would happen. It usually is full by November, but this year it didn't fill up until last week.
