Hey guys, my name is Kyle Coker and I am one of the people on here that has accepted their appointment. Since next year will be all the easier the more we network before hand, I think we should all be friends on a social media site like Facebook, so we can build relationships before we hit Beast! Again, I am Kyle Coker c/o 2015 from Beaumont Texas, add me. HOOOAAHHHHHH!!!!! On a side note did any of yall go to SLS session 1?

or you guys can join the "usma class of 2015" group on facebook and start networking from there :)

Kyle,

This is not directed at just you. This is a warning for all of the recent 2015 appointees.

There is a USMA 2015 facebook group already. There's a good number of people on there.

However, a lot of folks on that group are current cadets who could turn out to be cadre at Beast this summer, so I wouldn't go posting how you're going to be First Captain, a Rhodes scholar, and branch Delta Force. Some candidates at SLS regretted what they said on the SLS facebook group; I have no doubt that some new cadets will regret what they may have posted on this new group.

While there's no way to avoid getting yelled at or "hazed" at Beast, that doesn't mean you have to give the cadre a reason to give you extra attention.

Congrats on your appointment :thumb: see you in June.

Anyone who has an app't for 2015: You may want to set your profiles to private, if you haven't already. Your cadre are sure to creep your profile before Beast.

I cannot imagine cadre having time to take notes on who to give "special attention" to. However, one should always be wary of one's "digital footprint."

I would think such action (beast cadre searching new cadets "digital footprint") is unethical.

For every new cadet that might worry about cadre (cadets) finding out about his or her "digital footprint" , cadets should worry about old grads calling TACs or classmate stationed at WP about their "digital footprint."

Whether or not it is ethical, it does happen. There was a cadet in class of 2013 that was interviewed for his local paper. In the article he talked about how he was going to be POTUS someday. The article was noticed and passed around the Corps. This new cadet got some extra attention during Beast. He ended up in my son's company as a plebe. I asked at the end of the year if he was still there, he was, and was doing fine. My son said he had a good attitude and took the extra attention in stride. So if it happens - you can survive and thrive.

Very true. Same goes for all college students out there...watch what you put on the internet it can come back to haunt you when looking for a job.

In today's time and age, everyone should be aware of their "digital footprint". Although the main reason cadre look up Candidates before they get here is not necessarily to teach them that lesson (it has more to do with the ridiculous things some of them say and being able to bring it up during Beast) it does teach them the lesson in the end. Nobody here sees it as unethical since it is public information that could be set on private.

And yes mom3boys, they do have time, and plenty of it.

Similarly, there was a guy in the class of 2012. When we saw him on a visit, I felt like it was a celebrity sighting. If you don't get "extra attention" for something you do before beast, you will get it for something during beast. The cadre is there to get you ready to be a cadet at West Point. Try not to do anything too stupid, but if it happens, have a happy attitude and move on.:thumb:

Appointee

Received a phone call from my Congressman today that USMA contacted him and said they will be mailing my appointment letter next week. Is it too soon to celebrate???

Has any West Point offical instructed cadre to "look up" new cadets? I doubt it.

The primary responsbility of cadres is to instruct new cadets with the established program of instruction. Cadres are free to provide additional instructions to new cadets. However, actively searching new cadets "digital footprint" (i.e. googling new cadet's name, searching from new cadets on Facebook) seems little beyond the scope of West Point training. An accidental discovery is different as it is a public information.

What I am concern about is how the public information is obtained (i.e. active collection).

If you are considering branching MI, look up Intelligence Oversight.

Um...This is incorrect. It's pretty common. My Beast SL tried to find all our facebooks before we reported in.

In theory, practice and theory are the same. In practice, they are not. Cadre DO look up facebooks of their NCs. Believe me. Doesn't matter if they're instructed to or not, fact of the matter is that they do, so be wary of what you put on the internets.

Correction to my post - I just looked up the cadet I was referring to, he is in class of 2012 so it is probably the same one you saw mom3boys.

Candidates do you want to be the new cadet that all the parents have heard of and can remember your name 3 years later? Probably not if you can avoid it.

Obviously cadets have time to spend researching whatever they choose. Some take the time away from studying, duties, etc.; others do not. I guess it depends what kind of cadre you want to be. Some want to lead by example, while others want to be seen as "the heavy." When my son was cadre, he found so much face-to-face that needed correction, I cannot imagine he would have had time to break them of any bad habits he read about online!
