AFROTC Type 7 Scholarship

I have read about the type 7 scholarship, but I am still unsure what it is. We are still waiting on the paperwork from Maxwell, but DS is anxious to procceed. He contacted a out of state detachment and was told he would have to convert it to a type 2. He hasn't heard back from an in-state private school. Is a type 7 only good for a public in-state school? How hard is it to convert to a 3 year type 2? Any help would be appreciated.
 
Seems fairly clear to me:

type 7 – Pays college tuition up to the equivalent of the in-state rate and $900 per year for books. If a student receives a Type-7 offer but wishes to attend a college/university where they do not qualify under the guidelines above, the student can convert the four-Year Type-7 scholarship to a three-Year Type-2 scholarship. You cannot activate a Type-7 scholarship at a non-qualifying school and pay the difference.

What about a school that charges the same for both in-state and out-of-state? Would that work at school with a tuition of $30,000?
Also, unsure of what makes a school qualifing or not.
 
AFROTC Scholarship Funding

I'm new to this forum and not sure if I'm in the right place, but has anyone heard when AFROTC scholarships will be funded? I keep hearing about delays due to the military budget. As a single mother, I'm going broke trying to keep my cadet in school.

My son was awarded the scholarship almost a year ago and has yet to see any benefit from it. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

If he was awarded a 4 yr ly, he should have been funded last fall. Have him contact the det ASAP. All of the contracted cadets I know received their money back in Oct.

If he converted a Type 7 to a 2, he will not receive any money until he is a sophomore.


Caveat: Make sure that he can also present all of his bank statements if he is on scholarship, to prove that no money was ever deposited into his account. Also contact the bursar's office to prove that have never received any money.

Again...that would be if he is contracted. If he is a freshman on Type 2, he would not get a penny this yr, because it is a 3 yr contract.

Do you mean that AFROTC has not paid anything towards his tuition (you didn't say whether tier 1, 2, or 7) or his stipend or books for this 2010/11 school year? That's scary. My son has a Tier 1 for this coming fall when he'll be a freshman, and we can't afford for him to go to his school of choice if he doesn't have this scholarship to cover his tuition. Hopefully your son has talked to his commander at his detachment about this. I hope it gets cleared up for you soon.
 
Last fall there was a delay, I believe it took them until mid-Oct to straighten it out However, once it was straightened every cadet got their money, including back pay.

I think for our DS it was basically every few days money was being dropped into his account between Oct 15th through Nov 1st.

Talk to the det....the 1st shirt. They are the ones that work on pay...if the cadet does not inform them, they will have no clue of the problem.

OBTW pay days are the 1st and the 15th. Also book stipends are cut into 1/2. 450 1st semester, 450 2nd. It usually takes 6 weeks for you to get reimbursed, so expect to pay out of pocket in the beginning if each semester
 
A few months yes, but not an entire semester + a few months. Again if they are in ROTC now under contract it is imperative that the cadet talk to the det ASAP.

DD is in the same boat. I too am curious about the process of converting a *Type 7 (4yr) to Type 2 (3yr). I presume a qualified university/college is one that has an AF ROTC detachment on campus - cross town agreement schools may be qualified as well. If it is a qualified institution, is it as straightforward as asking to change from Type 7 to Type 2?


Don't forget that there are some universities that offer added incentives to ROTC scholarship recipients. Boston University offers a tuition "gap" for ROTC scholarship recipients. You have to read the details of it, but other universities offer similar incentives, and some don't offer anything.

DD was very selective in this process, she only applied to AF ROTC as a non-tech major, and only applied to universities (all out of state) that have an AF ROTC detachment on campus - risky, but it panned out. I also think it may have been an intangible picked up on during her interview, she knew what she wanted.

The Type 7 to 2 conversion presents an interesting option and could be a factor when DD determines which university offers the best value.

*We don't know the type of scholarship yet. She called, they said that she will be notified via mail. Based on all of the cut-backs, and her choice of a non-tech major, we are thinking conservative and assume Type 7 until told otherwise. It is all good in her eye's, she wants to be an officer in the Air Force, this is just one of many steps she will take to achieve her goal.

He was instructed not to "contract" until funding was made available. I don't understand any of this. I have contacted the detachment for answers, but of course they will not tell me anything. He hasn't received an enrollment allocation yet, which he should very soon. Would this make a difference?

He is not contracted. That means he will not get a penny for the Scholarship.

It appears from a glance that he is ROTC, but not scholarship.

What type of scholarship did he get? 1,2, or 7?

If it was a 7 is his tuition under the accepted cost barrier?

Also, you can call 24/7, yet if he is over 18, they will never respond to you. Sim to doctor/patient privileges.

Your DS needs to talk to them one on one.

It is up to him now to rectify the situation, by law they see him as a legal adult. You may be paying the bill, and he may be a dependent according to the IRS, yet not to them.

Have him go in ASAP.
 
Thanks, Pima. Now I'm really confused. They TOLD him not to contract until the funding comes through. Ugh!! I will make sure this gets straightened out ASAP!
 
Oh good lord. I just spoke to my DS. He says the scholarship is frozen. Once it is activated, THEN he contracts THEN he receives the benefits. Is this a new thing? I'm about to go nuts over this. What's with all this red tape?
 
If it were me, I would stop by the office of your Congressman first thing on Tuesday morning after President's Day weekend (don't call) and request to make an appointment to speak with him/her as soon as possible. He or she needs to hear this story as soon as possible, so s/he can take action (as well as use it on the halls of Congress to urge passage of a funding bill specific for the military). The whole issue is playing out in Congress as we speak.

Normally, I would not recommend taking this sort of action. But it appears that the entire military establishment seems to be powerless at the moment. If enough MOCs hear this story from you and others in the same situation, they can pass a bill that may help things. You will also have to be patient and courteous, but persistent.

Chelle has yet to say what type of scholarship her DS has. Type 1,2 and 7 are hs track.

He may have college track.

Two different programs.

Last spring this board was littered with the topic of AFROTC college scholarships being frozen.

If I recall correctly there was an AF blurb that for FY 2010/11 IS scholarships were frozen.

That being stated, IMPO the ball was dropped by them if this is the scenario.

If it is they did the hs track and were awarded a type 1,2, or 7 and the cadet fulfills the requirements, than yes, time to contact the MOC.

Chelle, what is needed from you right now is direction regarding your DS's scholarship.

Every thing matters. If he is a freshman OOS at a school who will charge him OOS prices,AND a type 7. You are SOL.

If he is type 2, different story.

Pull out that paperwork and read it carefully...the devil is in the details.

Again it comes down to the scholarship type.

Type 7 to 2 typically is easily converted. You will not have to meet a board. You just sign a paper asking for it to be converted.


Beware...the DodMerb can play an issue, since contracting would be in their soph yr, if they took it in Aug of their rising SR HS yr, it would not be current. The exam is only valid for 2 yrs.
