Lacrosse season starts tomorrow. I have an appointment and I want to play, but I don't know if it is worth the risk of injury. I don't plan on playing lacrosse for Army. Has anyone been through anything similar? Thanks for any advice you might have.

I'm in your situation, so I don't have much advice to give. Lacrosse season started today for me and I already have an injury stemming from conditioning.

I'm taking it easy right now, but boys lacrosse is definitely more hazardous than girls. If you want to play, then by all means do. I know I want to stick it out, but you definitely should keep your overall health in mind approaching R-Day and CBT as I'm trying to.

I'm always worried about injuring my back in weightlifting. I know how you feel. I would just take it easy and if you feel a potential injury coming on, explain your situation to your coach and take a break.

My son is a plebe, and played varsity high school lacrosse. He does not play lacrosse at West Point.

During his junior year, he had a season ending thumb fracture midway thru the season, but recovered by mid-June; a few weeks later, he had his DoDMERB physical and passed. His team finished up as the overall state champion.

Senior year, he was captain, and played the entire season - his best, and he played his heart out. Of course, he worried about an injury that might affect his reporting for R-day. He said his prep and conditioning prepared him well, and prevented serious injuries. He certainly played very hard, and took as well as he gave. He would not have traded that senior experience for anything; made it as far as the state quarter finals.

Should you play and risk reporting healthy for R-Day? Well you can't really wrap yourself in bubble-wrap before R-day, though parents do joke about that. Only you can make the decision.

Do what you need to do, but remember life is full of risks everyday. Make sure your senior year is everything you want it to be; your life will surely take a turn on R-Day.

Good luck to you and get ready for the experience of a lifetime.

I'm not playing lacrosse like you guys but I plan to keep playing with my club for soccer this spring. I think the benefits of getting some conditioning and training in that is in a fun environment as well as doing something I really enjoy and find worthwhile are worth it...I just don't plan on getting kicked in the face again any time soon (I'm a goalkeeper)

I'm still waiting on a waiver for a injury from playing soccer during my junior year (i'm a goalkeeper too, but was playing in the field when i got injured), but it hasn't kept me from continuing soccer, basketball and baseball for my senior year. injuries happen and i guess the bubble wrap might prevent them, but I'd rather risk possibly getting an injury than having to look back at my senior year and regret not having played. (and really, what are the odds i'll get hit squarely on the ear and pop my eardrum again? lol)

Ouch, yea I've had some problems with my hands the past year or two due to some bad challenges from some forwards, but I know how to take care of myself. I know this past fall season with my school team was one of the best experiences through out high school for me even if we just barely missed out on the chance to win the state tourney all together. My club team is fun and pushes you hard. I don't want to miss out on something because I'm thinking about what might happen. Its the stupid stunts like sledding off your roof or things similar that you should be looking to limit ;)

Knock on wood..... :shake:

Keep in mind that you do want to be in at least halfway decent shape come R-day. If a spring sport is the only thing that's going to motivate you to keep active, the benefits probably outweigh the risks.

yeah, it's always those annoying forwards who just don't know when to stop, even after the ball's in your hands. Even though I usually come out way ahead of the other guy in those collisions, i've still had my fair share of dislocated/hyperextended fingers.

there's no way i'd just leave it to knocking on wood really lol i usually have cotton or something in it when i play soccer, just to make sure it can't happen again.
