West Point issues letters to triple qualified candidates who don't win the their MOC appointments notifying them that they are on the National Wait List. Does the USNA issue a similar letter under similar consequences?

I do know that there is a national pool for candidates to recieve noms that haven't been used, however i don't know if this is what you are talking about.

I think you have some of your terminology jumbled. MOC issue NOMINATIONS not appoitments. Appointments are issued by the academy to those who are 3Q AND have a NOM. The National Wait List is generally the terms used to describe those who are 3Q with a NOM who don't yet have an appointment and the Academy goes down that list in order of WCS to issue appointments. If you didn't receive a NOM, you are no longer in the running to get an apppointment for this class year.

I'm not aware of any such letter. By April 15th, some candidates will be notified that they are "waitlisted" for an appointment, meaning that if more candidates than expected turn down their appointments, USNA will take some off the waitlist and offer them appointments.

My son received nominations to West Point from his Congressman and Senator but unfotunately was not the highest rated candidate of the 10 who were nominated by each. He therefore has been placed on the National Wait List by West Point and received a letter stating such.

He has also received a Congressional nomination to the USNA academy but has not received any word from them. I was just wondering if the USNA sends National Wait List notification letters like West Point to the candidates who do not receive the appointment for the Congressional district.

The National Pool from which many appointments are given is different from a 'waiting list' which the academy will have in some years. If you are on their 'waiting list' they will let you know that as mentioned by usna85 above.

My son received a letter from USNA last year saying that he was on the wait list. He had to respond to it within 5 days if he wanted to remain on the wait list. It comes in a TWE (thin white envelope). If you are in this position, the wait can go all the way up to I day. Its torture. May all of you receive the BFE you're waiting for!

I got the same letter last year.

As indicated in a sticky above, USNA's wait list is for those very, very close to a direct appointment. In some years, quite a few (maybe 50) WL candidates were offered appointments. In other years, none/almost none were. Last year was particularly tough and few, if any WL candidates received appts.

WL notices usually come at the same time as "rejection" letters. USNA tries to let WL candidates know their final status in May but, as the above posters have said, it can drag out well into June -- which, in my personal view, is unfortunate.

If you are WL'ed, you MUST pursue Plan B. Don't count on an appointment. If it comes, then you have a decision to make, But, as noted, you can't count on it. I will say that, if you're WL'ed, you have a good shot if you reapply, if you choose to do so.
