as the title states, what are the chances for cadets to walk on to the IC teams? i know there are tryouts during basic but if anybody out there could tell me, i was wondering specifically about swimming?
Thanks

I can only speak to my era...a LONG time before you were born! :wow:

It's not "unheard of" or "impossible" but it's not easy. There are quite a number of outstanding athletes recruited to USAFA that are also amazing academicians!

Truth time...I spent 4 years walking the terrazzo constantly asking myself: "HOW did I get here with THESE people?"

I "walked on" and made the track team. But academics ended my athletic career after 2 years. I applaud/stand in awe of those athletes that can compete successfully in Division 1 athletics at USAFA and do well academically!

Assume your child has contacted the swim coach already and expressed interest?
Male team limited to 25 swimmers. Assume female team is the same. (might be conference rule)
If a male - do they have at least NSCA Jr National times?
Follow the MWC champs this weekend and see if your child would place at conferences.
Look at current roster and see how many seniors there are and that will give you an idea of how many spots are available on the team. Guys coach often brings in more recruits than there are spots so there are cuts.
DS tried out as walk on, with 2 jr nat cuts, would have placed at conferences in those events but was last guy cut (the day after parents weekend 4* year), and had been regularly beating 2 of the official recruits in practice in sets, but had a few bad practices leading up to PW.
It's not impossible to make the team as a walk on (knows someone who did a year earlier) but very difficult.

This echoes my experience which was "awhile ago" and I have seen it in the past few years on several of the teams. If you are good enough you will be picked up. Talent floats. All the best to you.

Best answer is to ask the coach he knows what he wants and has coming in. They are great coaches and will be very honest.
