My daughter has received her guaranteed appointment and has received her nomination which was the only item needed to complete her application. Today, she received CVW invitation. My daughter attended a summer seminar in 2010. After that week, she loved USNA. Do you recommend going to CVW?

My son was invited last year as a HS junior, loved it. Went to summer seminar too last summer too, REALLY LOVED it, then was invited back to another CVW and in fact I just dropped him off this afternoon at USNA. They are two different experiences. While neither is critical for eventual success, the kids seem to enjoy the CVW and my son made good friends with the main mid who he roomed with and toured him around. The one good thing over the summer seminars is that now you will really get to see what it's like to get up early, do the school year academic routine, eat, workout, etc through the eyes of a middie and staying in the same room as the mids which you don't quite do during summer. More 'realistic' than summer seminar. But you don't say where you live and since she's committed to attend, so to speak, I wouldn't go if it was going to cost you a lot. Summer seminar would be more than enough to get the point of the atmosphere and experience. We went again because it's relatively close by and an easy drive (and we love to eat the lump crap at Buddy's at city dock if you really want to know the reason why )

We are in Texas. Thank you very much for your response. I just checked her volleyball schedule and she will not be able to make any of the CVW weekends.

well, when you do finally get there again, try Buddy's. The tables on the second floor directly look over the city dock and Severn river and they know how to do lump crab cakes right. Plus, price isn't bad and beer selection is good. If you love thin, hand made, fresh ingredient pizza and the best gelato i've had on the east coast a block up the dock is where you want to be.

you're going to enjoy Annapolis as a visitor.

With all due respect, I suggest that she give up one of her Vball WEs for this. The decision to attend USNA is a 9+ year commitment and something that will affect the rest of her life. H.S. vball is a moment in time. If I were you, or your DD, I would take any and every opportunity to explore what she is getting into.

CVW is different than NASS. It may well confirm her desire to attend, in which case, it's time well spent. Or, after CVW, she starts to have doubts, in which case it is equally time well spent.

Unless she's playing for the state championship, her future is much more important than her present. Being honest, giving up a CVW for a h.s. vball isn't "smart." If you can financially afford for her to attend, she should to it. As a USNA grad who played h.s. volleyball and did a CVW in the midst of it, there was ZERO question in my mind which was more important. However, this is merely my opinion . . .

Ditto usna1985

Just to chime in on both sides of this. DS did CVW before wrestling season and has a team mate who went during the season, possibly on DS advice. CVW by their report was worth the missed tournament. Hate to miss competition and they are both starters on a team that will VERY possibly contend for state duals title, but this is a decision that will affect her future tremendously. If you can't make a CVW try to visit on your own, we did and learned a lot but the CVW really seemed to solidify DS commitment to USNA. In our case it doesn't hurt that one coach is a retired Marine warrant officer who fully supports both guys in their goal of USNA. DS received appointment offers to USNA, USAFA, and USMA. He did not wait very long to send acceptance to USNA, pretty sure CVW was a big factor. Team mate has nominations and waiting patiently to see if appointment comes. Let your DD make the choice, a lot may depend on whether she is being recruited or is considering the possibility of VB at the academy. Have her talk to her coach and maybe they could even contact USNA coach for opportunities to visit. Best of luck either way.

While the counsel to attend CVW is sound and genuine, I'm sure, I'll be contrarian.

It depends. If it's one more vball match, don't sweat it. Go if it's financially no strainer. Conversely, your dd has an obligation and responsibility to her team, coach, school, and teammates. None different than what USNA will try to nurture in her. A commitment is a commitment. Didn't your coach make that fully understood before the pre-season?

CVW is a nice experience, but not earth shattering, especially if she's been there before, albeit for NASS.

She'll have plenty of CVWs ...she'll never have another senior VB season. Unless she plays for Navy.

And on that note, Navy has just made a monumental step toward becoming a national power in women's volleyball. Larry Bock, the winningest coach in volleyball history, has just been hired. He will not be satisfied with the ho-hum mediocrity of recent USNA volleyball teams. Place money on the idea that Navy'll be kicking behinds in the Pat League and becoming a national power soon.

So ...depending upon the circumstances of your team's season and your role on that team, CVW might well be totally inconsequential. Great if you can, likely making no difference beyond lending confirmation to what is already known. CVW is not the magic bullet to a guaranteed decision.

i just picked up my son from CVW

It's his second one (not sure why he was invited again but what the hey). He had an even better time than last time and made better observations than before. He's been trying to fit in SCUBA lessons during his busy senior year and it isn't working out. Low and Behold, he tells me to come late today to pick him up because he got to go with the Company he was assigned to and actually go with them to their SCUBA diving lesson in the pool this morning. I thought maybe he'd get to just breathe from a regulator on the surface and watch the mids do it but nope. He put on full equipment and did some laps in the 6 foot part of the pool and even learned to clear his mask underwater. He spent an hour on the ride home telling me all about the hypnotist and the magician that performed at USNA last night. In fact, some of it is on youtube already! He talked about this time around he could start to tell the difference between the kids that wanted to be aviators because they usually were a little more 'competitive' (examples that followed were not necessarily positive). He and the freshmen he was assigned with (2 out of the 3 were NAPsters) spent a lot of time talking about the different ways the kids were acting in anticipation of where they wanted to be assigned. The Marine wannabees were very easy to 'spot'/identify. In his PT this morning, he said he was above the average mid on the events that the mids were getting scored in and that was positive for him. He did two PT sessions during the visit and they affirmed his current workout program was effective and on the right track so that was very valuable. He said the mids he roomed with taught him how to spot the prior enlisted guys because they were more mellow, even keeled and grateful, helpful and nice. He analyzed the different types of kids he met and the leaderships styles of the kids that were giving speeches or whatever and that showed me he was getting his money's worth out of the visits. He is starting to envision himself as a leader at a SA and how he wants to be perceived. That was worth it.

I mention all this because it came up earlier if it was worth going even if you had been to a summer session. I was ambivalent before I picked him up base on last year's CVW. However, this time around he was a more mature person when he went and he had more of a purpose than the earlier visits and he got a lot more relevant information out of the visit. I'd say go if you can based on what I've heard today!

Who decides the invitations to CVW? Do the Navy IC coaches have any input on these invitations? Thanks in advance for the responses.

My daughter is 100% sure she wants to go USNA. I have taken everyone's advice at heart. I am going to see if we can afford sending her. :thumb:

I have surgery on my knee in a week and I just got a letter for a CVW. The doctor said my rehab would be 8-10 weeks at worst. What I want to know is would it be worth it for me to go, or am I better of not going? Thanks (March 31 -April 2)

As a fellow applicant and as a recruit for a sport....I can say that your daughter should attend the CVW without a doubt. I went out for my official track visit two weeks ago and I basically did the same thing they do on the CVW, staying with a mid and getting to experience the exact life they live every day. I absolutely loved the experience and it really puts into perspective what is expected of you on a daily basis....academically and athletically speaking. Try and get her out there because it is a great look at how you will be living and its definitely a wake up call to whether you are cut out for the military life or not.

wolfe: IMO, your rehab status may have a major influence on your CVW visit. If you will still have limited mobility (either still be on crutches or have trouble going up and down stairs), going to CVW may not be a good idea. There are a lot of "ladders" (stairs) in Bancroft, and Plebes aren't allowed to use them. OTOH, if it's likely that you will be able to get around well by then, going to CVW should be fine. Participate in PT to the extent you can without injury, and see what it's like to be a Plebe for a few days (understand that it's a lot less intense now than it was last summer).

questions regarding CVW

Why are some children asked to attend and some arent. My son was invted down for CVW this Feb. other boys were not... Is there any reason? does anyone know?
