With all of the recent talk about UPT, NASA/Astronauts, and aircraft I thought that it would be good to have a thread dedicated to aviation.

I'm pretty sure we have all of the branches aviation communities represented as well. I'm sure our newer members would like to hear some stories and background information about all of you Naval Aviators, pilots, and WSO's out there :thumb:

I don't know if we have any USMC aviators here, but you never really know if they're around until one of them gets lost... :biggrin:

As for stories...well...I'm not sure what kind you're looking for...

O'Club stories that involve lots of hand gestures and the expression "no- Sxxx there I was...." What kind of an aviator doesn't have a ready stash of those to fling out when surrounded by members of the opposite sex?:biggrin:
 
I may have a story about how long an M9 pistol can ride on a rocket pod in the dark skies over injun country...

Too funny. I remember back in "The Day"; we use to say: "What's the difference between a Fairy Tail and a War Story?" "A Fairy Tail starts off: (Once upon a time......) and a "War Story starts off: (This ain't No S***)

Sorry to ask a dumb question here, but what exactly is an "aviation" anyway? I don't remember covering this at the Infantry Officer Basic Course, either because I was sick that day or because it had zero relevance to us ground-pounders.

The dictionary says "aviation" is derived from the latin word "avi," or bird. Is this a carrier-pidgeon thing? I thought the Army hasn't used carrier pidgeons for years!

Aviation (noun): maneuver asset requested frantically by the infantry, after they have taken fire and retreated to their uparmored HMMWVs and/or MRAPs, to find and destroy the threat with gun/rocket/missile fire, thus allowing said infantry to return to the FOB/COP/JSS with many stories of how they were "in the s***" and scrawl witticisms about everyone else being "pogues" in whatever form of latrine is handy. Aviation will not be mentioned in the resultant CIB citations. :wink: :biggrin:

Honestly, if I had to do it all over again, I'd be a pilot. :wink:

I always got a charge out of the helicopter pilots who saw it as their main mission in life to make me lose my lunch when I went up in the air with them.

My DD informed me the other day that she wants to be a fighter pilot. She's a freshman in high school, but I'm gonna put her in touch with Pima and Bullet at some point.

I've crossed the Pacific a few times at altitudes up to 40K...

DD is looking to Marine aviation when she graduates from USNA with a degree in physics.

I guess they don't cover gravitational attraction and acceleration anymore.

The attached video of an F-16 strike was filmed by some Air Force Joint Tactical Air Controllers (JTAC) in Tal Afar, west of Mosul in Iraq.
A marine unit got pinned down in the street. They set their video camera on the bumper of their armored HUM-V, which they were using for cover.

Keep an eye on the opposing van parked just down the street. On the audio you can hear them shooting back and forth. The rounds you can hear are from the Marines, and the ones you hear pinging against the side of the vehicle with no accompanying pop are from the bad guys. When the Marine says they just fired the "rifle," it means an F-16 aircraft just launched a Maverick missile. You can hear it come in and see it strike the vehicle the bad guys were using for cover. Talk about pinpoint accuracy!

End of story...for the bad guys. Listen for the word "rifle" and then listen for the pinging of incoming rounds hitting the armored vehicle.

A lot of things in that "account" don't stand up to the common sense test, especially based on knowledge of that particular theatre.

Yep hornet, I think for many yrs you will always be like Bullet...looking like you only started it when it is March 31st.

I have to say it is hysterical to see some of these guys...By 5 pm on March 1st some look like they are about to become Yosemite Sam that day!
