Hello,
I have recently been accepted to USNA class of 2015. In preparation for plebe summer, I would like to begin shooting. Can someone please tell me what guns are used to qualify with during plebe summer? I have been told a Sig Sauer 228 and and an M16 Varient but then someone else told me differently. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

GO NAVY!
BEAT ARMY!

My class qualified on the M16A4 and the M11 (Sig Sauer 228).

I hate to break it to you, but range day is...one day. One morning, actually. Which really sucks. I know before I came I thought we'd get a week of really detailed instruction on shooting, but you don't, which is too bad because I like shooting. You don't need to prepare.

The instructors are MIDN 2/C. Despite some of them not having extensive firearms experience, they actually do a very good job. If you haven't shot much, you'll be fine. If you have shot before, it'll be a breeze. Some of my friends here had never fired a gun before and still shot expert or sharpshooter.

While on the topic of Plebe Summer,
I'm trying to find a physical goal to meet other than "the best physical condition of your life"
If I could manage to max the entire PFT before I-Day, do you think I'd be fit enough for Plebe Summer? Or is there another absolute threshold?

The PRT scores are somethin like
Run 1.5 miles: 8:00 or somethin like that
Pushups: 101 i think
Situps: 101 i think
If you can do those i'm pretty sure the physical part of plebe summer will be a breeze. I'm shootin for the same thing. Good luck to you.

USNA will send you a program to prepare yourself physically. I would focus on running. Be able to run 3-4 miles. Guys should be able to do 6:30 - 7:00 miles and women a minute slower (or better) over that distance.

For males, a perfect PRT is:
Run: 8:15
PU: 101
SU: 101

For females:
Run: 9:35
PU:85
SU:101

If you want to go ahead and max a Marine PFT too, good to go!

Males:
3 Mile Run: 18:00
Pull-ups: 20
Crunches: 100

Females:
3 Mile Run: 21:00
Flexed-Arm Hang: 70 seconds
Crunches: 100

Just training for the PRT is great, but there are lots of people who rock the PRT but suck at stuff like the O/E-course, buddy carries, etc. Maxing the PRT is a great goal (not a lot of people max), but diversify a little and mix in some other stuff too because the PRT isn't really the best marker for physical fitness. Pull-ups will help out a lot. It's not that you really do pull-ups that often, but stuff like the O-course will destroy you if you're not used to them. Look up the Marine OCS 8 week prep workout and scale it to your needs. It's pretty decent.

If you come to plebe summer in great shape, there's the possibility of losing fitness. They shoot to make PT challenging, but achievable, for the average plebe so if you come in a stud, it won't be that hard physically. There's ability groups for running but that's about it as far as variation in PT. Group 1, the fastest run group, runs FAST.

A "good" score to come in running is around a 6:00 mile for guys and a 7:00 for girls, or around a 9:30 PRT males/11:00 for females. Regardless of gender, you should be able to maintain around an 8:00 minute mile for 3-4 miles. That'll put you in a good spot.

Really? I didn't know that.

Hell, in my day, we didn't even qualify with a rifle - just a pistol. And I think they boated us over to the range every day for 3 or 4 days. We shot a lot of bullets. We qualified with a .45 - it had quite a kick.

Are you saying they go through the complete qualification firing, for both rifle and pistol in one morning? It just doesn't seem possible.

When I saw both my sons (twins) with E's for pistol & rifle, I just about laughed. We are not a "gun family." They've never really ever fired a weapon. They've never been hunting.

I asked, "How in the hell did you guys manage that?"

They gave me this incredulous look and said, "Dad - we've played a lot of XBox and blown a lot of stuff up in our time. The motor skills are there." They were serious, too.

We didn't have video games in my day, so, perhaps our fine motor skills were not as good as today's kids.
