Revoking Appointments?

Sorry to bother you guys again with another question but...

On the Offer of Appointment letter, it stated that the the offer of the appointment is conditional on continued excellence in academics... etc.

My transcript became available today and I got a D in a core class (AP Bio). It didn't greatly affect my GPA but I'm a nervous wreck at the moment wondering if my appointment would be revoked because of this.

I don't know if it would be helpful to say that I have a principal nomination, if it matters in whether it would help me keep my appointment or not.

Thanks for the help/advice guys!

Appointment revoked?

I asked a current Mid at the USNA about this. He said as long as you don't fail anything, you should be good. I don't think your Appointment will be revoked :)

You should be fine, if they ask tell them, but It doesn't sound like you got a conditional appointment (they sometimes give conditional appointments to kids in college in my experience). Don't worry about it too much, just do your best.

Later,

Brian

Thank you for the advice guys!

I really hope that they don't take it away from me. Thanks for calming me down!

Why did you get a D? You had grades good enough to attend USAFA for 3+ years, then suddenly a D? What happened?

Last semester I had been working two(sometimes three) jobs (25hrs/week, when I turned 18 I worked 40hrs/week) so that I could help support my family. One parent is unemployed and the other works enough to pay the rent so I help out to cover the rest of the expenses (food, water, electricity, internet...) as best as I can.

Since the class is test based (60% test, 20% labs, 10% binder) I didn't have time to review for the class because I came home at around 10/11PM. I have dropped that AP Bio class to an Adv Bio class because I knew something had to give and I didn't want another "D" on my second sementer transcript. I currently have an "A" in Advance Bio.

I had a 3.4 unweighted (and is now a 3.3 thanks to the D.) I can say for a fact that the Academy looks at the "whole person" and while I see that grades don't make up a candidate/appointee, I'm scared I slipped up really bad on the D to go below what they have alloted me and that they will revoke their offer of appointment from me.

Any thoughts on whether they would let me keep my appointment?

Hi Jase, I think with your extenuating circumstances you will be ok as long as you keep up your grades from now on. I am glad you switched to a class that you can keep an A in; but now it's time to make sure you keep your appointment and cut back on your work hours!!!! You don't want to blow this opportunity do you? So your one mistake will be ok, but you can't repeat it! Just my opinion. I know that this happened to someone before and it was ok, but I think the ball is in your court now - what are you going to do with it?
I think your parents will understand and they have to do without your paycheck in a few months anyway - wouldn't they prefer you get the opportunity to go to the Academy instead of covering family expenses?

Maybe you and your family can sit down and budget, get rid of cable if you have to, ask for assistance with electricity but don't hurt your chances anynmore to keep this great opportunity that you have been given. You can even ask the local food bank for help with food (or a church); but you need to have more time to focus on your studies. I'm sorry you've had to grow up so early, but I'm sure it's made you a terrific person. As the Academy likes to say, you are building character.

Thank you. I have decreased my working hours to 20-25hrs/week and only work 8 hours a day when there are is no school. (I got a wonderful pay increase in one of my jobs and it evens out.) We do already live with necessities only, no cable and pre-paid cellphones for emergencies only.

I really do hope that all of you guys are right in saying that my appointment won't be revoked. I'm sending in my transcript on Monday!

Jase, IF the academy was concerned, they would contact you first about why there were grades issues and circumstances like that would be considered. I doubt they will do anything, and they wouldn't do anything without a conversation first. So don't worry.

But, I would suggest considering how much work you do. Mainly, find that balance such that your family is supported and you can do well in school. Two reasons there: if you continue to support your family with cadet pay, it's probably not going to be near what you make now and if you enter unprepared for the academics then you risk probation and potential expulsion, esp with cuts going on.

I applaud you for helping your family. Consider what will keep YOU in best shape to retain your appointment and be successful at the Academy. That success will also be the best for your family, IMO. I don't know any details, and don't need to. I wish you the best!

Sweat off the forehead. I will keep that in mind every time I have doubts, especially when I put that stamp on the transcript envelope.

Thank you so much for your help!

It may be a good idea to contact the appropriate contact be it your ALO or whoever at the Academy and give them a heads up and explanation before the Academy receives your transcript. Being proactive is generally a better bet then waiting for them to contact you. It shows you taking responsibility and that this means a lot to you

Thanks for the advice.

I did call my admissions councelor and she said what Hornetguy had stated that it would raise a red flag in my admissions and that they would need to re-review. She also said that they may required some writing or talk to me about why that had happened, but wasn't sure on the whole process of it.

Hey Jase,

I was reading through this and am curious because I find myself in the same exact situation with Physics 2 C AP. How did everything go? And did you get a D for a semester average or a 6 weeks grade? Just curious and I'm also currently a nervous wreck so any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I did some snooping, seeing as OP is probably off this forum judging by how long ago this was. They posted asking about BCT in mid June so it's LIKELY their appointment was not revoked. From what I've heard/seen, unless you have specific restrictions on your acceptance things are generally ok as long as you pass/graduate. Hope this helps.
