Son received scholarship but.....

Oh, I feel like a stupid Mom.....
My son just received a NROTC scholarship....but I told him not to apply there since it was his 3rd choice.....Well.....the application deadline for the school was December 1, 2010....and there is no way to get in now.....even though he has a scholarship.....

Word of advice to all parents.....totally understand the complete system and how it all works so this does not happen to you!!

When did his status change? Could this be the beginning ...

Susie, I'm so sorry to hear this...there are so many twist and turns in this process, it's hard to keep up with them all. ?Best of luck to your son and family.

Can't he do a transfer?

I have never checked online, I don't even know his password......Just got the mail this morning and it was there.

CandidateinSD...Thank you for the good luck.....I'm glad I'm on son #1, so sons 2&3 may have a chance!!

My son does have an appointment and 2 nominations to USMMA, so that is where his heart is.......but just this morning I was chatting with Marciemi at the importance of a backup plan.....and then I went out to the mail.....

I posted this really so other parents don't make the mistake and really research and understand how this works.......I'm just bubblewrapping like crazy now so we can stick with Plan A!!!!

SOME SCHOOLS TALK TO ROTC!

It isn't over unless that school admissions doesn't "talk".

Contact the school and see if they will do what I call back door admissions.

It can't hurt you to ask, it can only help. For all you know they can say "we will give a conditional admittance if h meets the std"

FWIW this is rare.

However, it was also a 1 in million shot to meet you spouse. It happens!

Son Received Scholarship

Don't give up! There are options.

Your son's high school guidance counselor/college advisor may have a relationship with School #3. You should get in touch with the counselor and explain the situation. Colleges do make exceptions.

If your son was admitted to his first choice school, you should contact the NROTC scholarship officer of that school and find out where he stands in the ranking. For example, it could very well be that he is third on the merit list and the higher rated candidates who have been offered scholarships have also been admitted to the Naval Academy and will not make use of their scholarship.

These things happen, as I can attest from personal experience.

I believe OP's son was accepted at USMMA, his Plan A, and will be going there... at least that is how I understood the 2nd post by OP.

From the NROTC application:

"You are still responsible for applying to and being accepted for admission to the college /universities that you indicate for the Naval ROTC scholarship. College choices are used for placement at a particular NROTC unit only. Placement at a unit does not guarantee you admission to that college. We strongly suggest that you apply to all five of your listed choices. If selected for a scholarship, it will be for one specific NROTC unit and may be used at the unit's host school or any affiliate. Candidate must apply to, be accepted at, and enroll in one of that unit's affiliated schools in order to utilize the scholarship .

Applying to all five of the choices along with any cross-town affiliates will increase the chances for acceptance and enrollment and will therefore increase the opportunities to use a scholarship if selected."

This was my understanding too. Good luck at USMMA and thanks, for posting this issue for all the parents to come after us(God bless their poor souls...the budgets will be worse and who know what computer gliches they'll have)
