Posted yesterday are two interesting video clips from Coast Guard Public Affairs on the decommissioning of the "Queen of the Fleet" the Cutter Acushnet in Alaska. Interesting to hear the ship's crew talking about the need for team work on such an old ship patrolling such a challenging sea.

On a sidenote, "Coast Guard News" is not an official blog or source. I personally like it, but I just wanted to put that out there.

My son served on the Acushnet for seven weeks his 3/c summer. It was quite an experience for him!:shake:

Great vsl, I got a chance to serve on her sister vsl the Yocona-mighty Yoc when she was in Oregon.

I read in a newspaper article there is talk of trying to keep the ship as a floating museam. In addition to its life as a USCG cutter, when it was origionally commissioned as a US Navy warship, it saw service at Iwo Jima. Tough to come up with funding for that in this tight economy.

I agree Bruce it would make a great musuem. Her lines are beautiful and a very powerful ocean going vsl. One of my best friends had his first tour after graduation aboard her. He loved it-She was homeported at the time in Gulfport,Ms so she's been everywhere. These older vsls really have the character and feel of the past with them. Sad to see her go!

The ship in the book "The Perfect Storm" was the USCGC Tamaroa.
