Hello all. Just recieved my official letter from AFROTC today and was awarded a 4 year Type 7 scholarship and I have a few questions regarding the form that I need to turn in. First off, I know that a Type 7 can only be used at a school where I am eligible for in-state tuition unless I transfer it to a 3 year Type 2. However, the out of state school I plan to attend has some subsidies available to me. I plan on attending West Virginia University and this is straight from the Air Force Website:

West Virginia University offers out-of-state type 2 and type 7 AFROTC high school scholarship winners a tuition waiver for any costs that exceed the amount of the AFROTC scholarship. Additionally, all incoming AFROTC high school scholarship winners receive a room and board scholarship consisting of a double-occupancy room and a 19-meal plan, for as long as the student maintains their AFROTC scholarship and the student lives on campus. The WVU Alumni Association also offers scholarships each year through the Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund to deserving Air Force ROTC cadets from West Virginia, based on merit.

So my question now, is what do I do about the form I need to turn in? The form asks if I want to accept the type 7 scholarship or transfer it to a 3 year type 2 scholarship. What do I do? I want to accept the scholarship but I want to go to WVU where the additional tuition will be waived.

Also, I was offered for a technical major. The major that I applied and got accepted to for all my schools is Biology. But, Biology is not considered a technical major. The form has a list of technical majors and I do not have a problem changing my major to one included in the list such as Environmental Engineering. Should I contact the school or the AF about this to see what I can do about my major?

Thanks in advance and hope everyone has a wonderful day!

First of all, congratulations on receiving a scholarship! :thumb:

You should contact WVU Financial Aid office and talk to them; tell them you have received a Type 7 and if they will, in fact, accept that scholarship amount as total tuition payment.

Then you will also need to contact WVU Admissions and ask them how to change your major to Environmental Engineering. It's probably just a written request unless there are certain qualifications and/or prerequisites for that program. At any rate, they are who can help you get it changed.

Good luck!

but what do i put on the form that I need to turn in to the Air Force. It asks me If i want to accept the scholarship or transfer it to a type 2, but this is an unusual case. If WVU didnt offer the subsidies then I wouldnt be able to attend that school with a type 7.

I have not seen the form as my DS has not applied for AFROTC, but I would still check with WVU to confirm they will accept the Type 7 as total tuition payment for the entire time you are on scholarship (since what you read was on the AF website, not WVU's) and if they confirm that, then you should be good to go. Then you can check on the form that you accept the Type 7.

Maybe someone who has more knowledge about AFROTC scholarships will jump in and give you more info.

Well I went up to an open house and one of the cadets told me that also. But just to confirm it i emailed the detatchment so well see :thumb:

Put down Type 7. My daughter was thinking about using her Type 7 at WVU last year and after throughly researching it discovered that YES you can use your Type 7 there. You do NOT need to convert it to a Type 2. In addition WVU was offering FREE R&B including about a 21 meal  per week plan to ALL AFROTC scholarship awardees. It was a great deal.

Good Luck and congrats!:thumb:

thanks!! Yes it is a great deal and its a free double occupancy room and 19 meal plan!

Im still curious about the situation with the majors though

Thanks, ag, for giving them a definitive answer. Sounds like WVU offers AFROTC scholarship winners a great package!

Also, I was offered for a technical major...
But, Biology is not considered a technical major...
This is somewhat confusing to me. When you applied for an AFROTC scholarship what did you list as your intended major? Did you change your mind about your intended major since you began the AFROTC/College application process?

The short answer to your question is that if you have been awarded a scholarship for a major in the Technical Category, then the AFROTC will expect you to enroll and major in one of the approved technical majors. Hopefully changing majors before Fall 2011 won't be an issue at WVU. FWIW - It is normally recommended that you pick a career (major) first, and then apply for an AFROTC scholarship and admissions to your colleges for that major.

Great Question.

I was under the assumption that AFROTC along with all others required you to list a major on your application.

Is it possible AFROTC can award a scholarship but restrict you to a major that is different then the one you listed on your application, that would the first I've heard of that happening.

No i havent changed it at all. my mind has been set on bio for about 2 years now and i put Biology on my AROTC, AFROTC, and all my college apps

Would be a surprise to me also.

I'd contact your rep at the AFROTC scholarship site and the Detachment at WVU and ask them if the AF is now considering Biology as a Tech major...even though it isn't listed as such. I've never heard/read of an example where the AFROTC awards a Tech major only scholarship to someone that didn't list a Tech major on their application.

I am with AG, I have never heard of that either. Double check now before you get too far down the road.

My daughter received a type 2 AFROTC scholarship and listed as her first choice of major as chemical engineering. The other two choices were aeronautical engineering and aerospace engineering. There is a question that she answered that asked, would you want a higher scholarship if you decided to go into a technical major. She said yes thinking that she chose technical majors anyway. Well it turns out that for the high school scholarship, chemical engineering is not considered a technical major. So now she has to choose something from the technical major list and sometimes the majors and the schools that offer them through AFROTC do not match up. I wish she had been a little more careful about the schools she applied to and the available majors at each school in which the scholarship can be applied.

Excellent advice.
Only list majors that you are seriously interested in pursuing and make sure you have some acceptances at colleges that both offer these majors and have AFROTC...AND...that you can use a Type 7 scholarship in the likely event you receive one.
Good luck to your daughter!:thumb:
