Dad has to brag a bit.:redface: My DS was offered the scholars program. He turned in his papers Friday at open house and passed Dodmerb yesterday. We all are very pleased.:biggrin:
This journey all started with an AIM application more so he could get a feel for ROTC style life. Though the odds were not in his favor to get in the CGA. He made the AIM cut and came back pumped about the school but feeling like his chances were slim. I told him his chances were zero if he didnt apply.
Well the scholars offer came back and we hadnt even researched this option. Had to go down for open house, DS said Aim was a blur and he wanted to look around before handing in his papers.
If I got anything out of this its you dont "win" if you dont enter. Aim is a great way for them to get a feel for the "life". When admissions says they look at everything not just sat and act marks they are serious.

Congrats! Class of 2016!

The preliminary schedule shows CGA Scholars Orientation: 22 July 2011 - 02 August 2011.

R-Day for 2016 (25 June 2012) is 481 days away. :eek:
 
Congratulations to your son. I'm currently at NMMI now part of the CGAS program and from when I reported in to the Academy for summer orientation to now I know I will be definitely more prepared when I report in for swab summer
 
I second MDtrack's motion. Whether you attend Marion Military or New Mexico Military, your son will be a leader academically and militarily when it comes time for the academy. If I could chose, I would rather choose the prep program than the direct route. a solid academic grounding in a military setting prior to the academy is invaluable. Also, the pay's ridiculously good for a college student ;)
 
Luigi59 - I think you are probably pretty close on those dates. I know my DD - CGAS Cadre - said that it ran 18-Jul thru 2-Aug, but that probably includes some prep time.

deant - Congrats to your son! He won't be sorry for the choice he made - I know my DD isn't! (hopefully, she won't be too hard on him during Orientation) :eek:
 
Ds paper work shows the 18th also. He is getting pumped now. Started on the paper work last night.

Info on scholars program

I also applied to the United States Coast Guard Academy and i wanted to know what your son's academic profile is like. I'm just trying to figure out if my grades are good enough for the cga scholars program. I'm sorry for the personal question I'm just trying to paint a picture for myself.

deant, that is such great news! YAAAAAY!!! Congratulations to you and your son. It's nice to hear more good news from CGA candidate parents like us who are waiting to learn their childrens' admissions status. We're all in this together and we all celebrate with you!

Anyone ever hear if the CCA has ever granted a waiver to a candidate with mild asthma?
 
Kim, in a word, yes. My son was diagnosed(wrongly I believe) with ashtma when he was about ten. However, he never used an inhaler despite playing nine years of football, running the 400 in track and weightlifting. He was originally dq'ed but appealed and it was waived. So it can be done. Good luck!

If you are just beginning the process, I suggest being proactive and seeing a pulmonary specialist as soon as possible to get a clean bill of health. Someone told me a few years ago to do that, and it worked out perfectly. I, too, believe DD was incorrectly diagnosed in JR high. Never used inhaler through high school and was able to clear DoDMERB with the pulmonary specialist report as soon as it came back for the asthma questions. Good luck!

WKSLP,

To my knowledge, all applicants are considered for a regular appointment first. Then, if not accepted for a regular appointment, they will be considered for the Scholars program. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure that is how it goes!

Yes, you have a solid grasp of the procedure!

The CCEB will review every file and make two recommendations - one for (or against) direct appointment and and one for (or against) CGAS appointment.

Those candidate files recommended for direct appointment will receive direct appointments.

Those candidate files recommended for CGAS will be sent to the CGAS board and reviewed again(!) and the CGAS board will then tender the appointments to the CGA Scholars program.

Hi! Quick Question... Do you know if those being considered for CGAS receive word of acceptance/ denial by April 15 or sometime later? Thanks!
